Weve always called it the monkey puzzle tree.

I was of similar thought, but it cannot be. This is an image of a Monkey Puzzle tree:

Agree with gleeber, it has always been called the monkey puzzle or monkey tree. Does anybody know how old it is?? It must be a fair age now, it looked very mature when I was young and playing on it, and that wasn't yesterday.

I was talking to my uncle in Inverness on Tuesday and he asked about it. He played around it almost 80 years ago

This was Janet Street from circa 1900 (image chored from the Thurso Piccys thread!). No sign of the tree there. There is a tree down the bottom end, but it's clearly on the other side of Sir George's Street.

Is this the tree you mean?

I've only got a picture of it in the snow but it may help others to identify it.

It was the one on the right I thought was a willow.

But I'm really no horticulturist!

If it gets pink blossoms on, like someone said, it is probably a weeping cherry tree.

On good authority I am told it is a contorted hazel.

The other name for it is 'Twisted Hazel'.
