In Royal New Year Honours list
A local name stands out
A gent whose input to Caithness
Deserves the loudest shout
O’er years he’s helped the young to learn
Of engineering glory
And so, it’s time to lift the lid
And broadcast wide the story
This one-time college lecturer
In DFR now based
Through Science Festival and such
Gives kids a career taste
He’s been for years a-grafting hard
For long-term good of us
Promoting things like bats and stars
He even bought a bus
Now recognised with MBE
And due a presentation
Her Maj to pass out medal at
Buck House his destination
Imagine if you will the scene
In posh domain, confused
What is a Scouser in a suit?
Most often ‘The Accused’
There’s Patrick in the queue for gong
With soldiers, sailors, nurses
He sees Policeman in the line
‘The Bizzies!’ Patrick curses
Some Scousers visit Royal house
And silver forks they keep
The guards confused, in Highland dress
Pat needs a sporran sweep
A word on kilt; it is quite long
And fairly wide in form
He tends to trip o’er hem although
It keeps his ankles warm
The tartan’s colours have an air
Of highland mist and fog
‘Which clan is that?’ we ask wee Pat
‘Twas blanket for the dog
Then back to his adopted world
In far and windy land
Promoting science to the world
And leading Gaelic band
All hail Pat Kieran MBE
A man of mighty passion
For engineering science skills
That won’t go out of fashion
