It is not as bad as you make out. The cost is very variable and depends on the age of the car, engine size etc as per the DVLA website

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/taxation.htm#Private

Hope yours is a little engined car

My car is an X reger, and just misses out on the new emmissions regs, so I have to pay whatever the full rate is, even though I get about 45 miles per gallon, and the car is a 1600 petrol twin cam 16 valver.

What a brilliant new idea the Chancellor has come up with.
Is anybody old enough to remember the last time this system was used when they varied the Tax according to the Horse Power of a car?

By the way, don't bother looking for a car in Band A. It seems that only two cars fall into that category. One has never ever been sold in Britain and the other stopped being sold here three years ago.
Mind you, it was a good sound bite for the Chancellor to get away with.
