I see John Baikie is running another Beginners SLR Course in February.
Details Here (http://www.atpe44.dsl.pipex.com/dates.htm)
I went to the 1st one he held in September last year and got so much out of it as I hadn't a clue what half the settings on my camera meant.
The course covered the basics and how/when to use the different settings.
I went away with a good understanding of how my camera worked and its now off the automatic mode! The course covered exposure as well as how the camera actually works, and went into all the settings on the camera and what they do. It also looked at different methods to get different results using depth of field and exposure compensation
If you are new to SLR photography or just want to learn a bit more, I thoroughly recommend going on this course, I feel it helped me immensely
