That sounds interesting, on three occasions over the last couple of weeks I have seen a bird rise and fly off, while walking the dogs in the dunes at Reiss beach.
Although the flight of this bird looked familiar, (I used to work on a shooting estate down South) I would not have even considered it to be a Woodcock, but it moved too quick for me to identify it as a local species. Is it possible that it might have been a Woodcock?
It seems there are a few around at the moment, saw one myself yesterday.
Here's a photo of one taken a few years ago.

I assume this is a Woodcock with it's chick that i saw this morning on the Cliffs near Lybster. Not to the same standard as previous pic shown.

It certainly wouldn't be a Woodcock chick at this time of year, April - May is the time for chicks. If the bird was of similar appearance but smaller than the Woodcock, then it could have been a Snipe, here's a photo of one for comparison.

Looked at some of my rejected pics, markings would suggest you are right in saying a Snipe nirofo. pic not in focus but the markings are clear.

I was out for a couple of hours today around Wick countryside.
I came across 3 snipe at the trinkie and 4 snipe up around Noss.
Unfortunately camera was out of battery but fully charged for my next visit when I probably won't see anything as exciting. never mind thems the breaks.
