View Full Version : Name for New High School

As Wick High School is falling down and Thurso High School needs significant investment, I'd like to propose the name 'Alexander Bain High School' for the proposed spectacular new build at Watten.
The name sums up the history and technological aspirations of the area, and this 'superschool' will enable the top-class education our kids deserve, while maximising value for money.
It'll also serve to minimise the rivalry between the two main towns in the County.
What do you think?

Goodness me Tubthumper, keep up with the situation. Haven't you heard, the best site for a new Wick High School is the Bignold Park.

Wouldn't that make Skool Kool?

That made me spit my coffee!!

Putting it in Watten would upset the kids as they'd have nowhere to go at lunch time... There's not many streets for them to wander and also no hospital canteen for them to get their lunch.

forget the bignold that'll upset e mannies wae their balls
why not the park opposite Tesco's, then knock all the rubbish buildings behind the school and redo the front part for the council buildings. with the space behind create a decent car park

Do you have investments in a bus company ? If not, I wonder watten earth you're thinking about.
Value for money - who pays for the bussing costs FOREVER ?
And, what's wrong with a little rivalry ?
Thirsa forever.
That's what I think !

We might well laugh at this post but it is amazing how some names will stick, even if just a nickname, I for one will remember "THICK" forever LOL.

Bain is a Gaelic name I believe.

Whether it's true or not. The name Bain is allegedly a French name. Way back many moons ago, French convicts were sent to the far north Scotland. The name was 'DeBaine'

As the years went by, the name got shorter.

God! Have I turned into a socialist?
Most definitely.

It can be cured though.

It must be a complete no brainer to put a big school in Watten. Every child bar a few will have to travel there by car/bus what a complete traffic mess in a small village which is already cut in 2 by a major road. And imagine a thousand kids roaming aimlessly around Watten during their dinner hour! Parents will have to make more time to allow for travel in the morning.

Complete madness.

Significant savings from a single well-insulated modern building as opposed to two clapped out scabby old ones.
Bus transport: no significant increase as proposed railway halts at Watten & Halkirk are to be installed, in addition another class 158 DMU set (surplus from Edinburgh Haymarket) is to be based in Wick (will also form the ~10am departure) from Feb 2011
Re swarms of bored teenagers roaming round Watten at lunchtimes: Is that better or worse than them roaming round Wick & Thurso? Anyway, new building is planned to have (a) significantly improved canteen & snack bar facilities, (b) accomodation and grounds to encourage participation in lunchtime activities & sports (c) combining the staffs of Wick & Thurso schools will allow all pupils in the County to receive the best of all worlds in education.
Bearing in mind where our schools presently sit in the league tables, maybe 'Thick High School' isn't such a bad name???

Someone bring me up to date here. Is this something that has been proposed elsewhere, or just here on the Org forum?

As for the new railway halt, there's nothing new under the sun, I suppose. I remember going there with my dad to pick things up fifty years ago! However one should recall the old joke:
Tourist: Why didn't they build the railway station a bit closer to the village?
Local: Somehow they thought it would be better to build it next to the railway line.
It's a fair walk (and there's a loch into which a kid or two might be inclined to push another).
