Hi. I've just gone 'wireless for the first time by using a USB wireless adapter and a Siemens Gigaset SE587 router (the kind given away free by Tiscali).

Here's a pic I've made of my screen after clicking the 'connected' icon on the bottom right corner. What is this 'Other Network' - is it maybe a neighbours's internet connection? If so, it must be a good one to be showing 'excellent' signal strength. If it has nothing to do with the neighbours, what problems do I have and how would I solve them?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

When you are using a usb wireless adapter, its always going to pick up other networks in range. Its not a problem. its just showing you what is available. Obviously you are only authorized to connect to your own one. some people I am sure would try and connect to any networks that are not locked down and use them. Most people should know not to have their wireless router unsecured because every Tom, Dick and Harry will be trying to use it.

if you had that same wireless adapter installed on a laptop and you were in a city centre then you'd see a lot more than 2 wireless networks, you'd see wireless hotspots supplied by BT, T-mobile etc, coffee shops connections plus peoples home Broadband connections.

I hope this clarifies. as long as you can connect to your own one then dont worry.

Hi Brian. That's what I thought so thanks for confirming it. And thanks again for the stick - a grand wee thing. My next plan is to get an internet radio. That'll tell me how strong my own signal really is I suppose.

I haven't had a look recently but I'd recommend the Logitech Squeezbox

I've just had a look at the Squeezebox Duet for a customer. Although very easy to setup and feels easy to use, I have had problems in that the Squeezebox player was not recognised by the server software. Other than that it looks like a nice unit and very close to what I was looking for myself.

Aye, the Squeezebox looks interesting. Although I think I'd prefer built in DAB/FM (Pure Evoke Flow, say). We'll see...
