Hi,

I'm looking for some information and I thought I'd use the wonderful Message Board since it seems to work for so many people.

My girlfriend is currently staying in Wick and she is looking for some help with her English, she is from Venezuela so her native tongue is Spanish, her English is pretty good but she would like to study while she is here.

It would also be good for her to get out to meet some new friends etc.

Does anyone have any ideas?

There is a course running at Thurso College at the moment but it is only on Monday afternoons.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Cheers
Colin

An English course for 'ethnic minorities'?

What the hell does that mean?

So the average Caithnesian can sign up? A lack of faciltiy English wise would mark no-one as a minority.

Is this course really designated as such?

Let me know. I do need a laugh.

I do not believe for one minute that there is such a title for such a course.

I guess being the sole Venezuelan (?) in Caithness would entitle her to an Ethnic Minority English class.

A hearty welcome to her - hope she enjoys her stay.

She could always give Spanish lessons for English lessons?

I think the more usual titles for courses such as these are

ESOL - English for speakers of a foreign language
ESL - English as a second language
EFL - Englsih as a foreign language
