Welcome to the org tessie.

Would the Orkney Brew be a home made beer?

I enjoy beer and in this part of the world it is not the favoured drink, so , although I have never had a go at home brew , it is something that I would consider with a bit of advice on how to do it.

Is the Maine USA, the one that Roger Miller sings about in King Of The Road, destination Bangor Maine?

Having made another batch last night, I thought I would search e' org for home brew activity. Worryingly scarce! Dont e orgers make home brew? Or have Tescos reeled you all in with the lure of BOGOF's and other loss leaders on ready made imported beer?

Tessie (probably long gone) - The Orcadian Brew is best experienced in Orkney - A bit like the line on the Colin Campbell tape for the advert for "Cloot" aftershave, scented with herbs that will only grow on a Caithness mideen! So whilst you could attempt to make an Orkney Brew in Maine, it will never taste as good as it does in Orkney. Orkney Brew, like the Caithness Herbs, really needs the aura of Orkney to make it special! ;)

As for the stories, well, although there are a huge number of potential stories associated with drinking Orkney home brew, regrettably, we can never seem to remember them, or at most, hazy bits and pieces of them! - Mental note to ones self - Use less sugar next time....

Kevin - Beer is not favoured in Caithness? Surprises me! You certainly should consider it, as its a piece of cake to make it with a kit, and, taking your time out of the equation, about 50p a pint to make a top of the range kit with proper brewing sugar / spraymalt, and about 27p a pint for a budget basement kit with common or garden granulated sugar. I read on the Interweb that theres been a 2 or 3 fold increase in home brewing stuff being sold since the rises in duty and VAT have pushed the price of pub and off-licence beer up a fair bit. Apparently, even supermarkets like Tesco (sorry for swearing...) are selling starter kits for beer, wine and alcopops!

Advice? Not a lot needed. If you can follow the instructions on a tin of beans as to how to heat it up, you'll manage to follow the instructions on the side of a tin of malt as to how to turn it into beer.
