One of folk music's best totty, Mary Ann Kennedy (alongside Na Seoid), will be coming to the Royal Hotel on the 23rd. A fine singer - and a fine clarsach player, too - she's well worth seeing.

MARY ANN KENNEDY & NA SEÒID IN SPECIAL MÒD CONCERT AT THE ROYAL HOTEL, THURSO

The cream of Gaeldom’s vocal talent hits Thurso this month in support of the 2010 National Mòd in Caithness. Mary Ann Kennedy & Na Seòid will play a special one-off concert set as part of Highland Homecoming, hosted by the Mòd Ghallaibh team who are bringing the Mòd to Caithness for the first time ever. The concert at the Royal Hotel in Thurso on Friday 23rd October is also a Caithness first for Mary Ann’s dream-team of young male Gaelic singers.

The formidable line-up in Na Seòid, which means ‘the heroes’, can claim no fewer than nine Mòd Gold Medals among the singers, who include Lochinver’s James Graham – a BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year – and Calum Ailig MacMillan from the West Coast powerhouse, Dàimh. Also singing are the 2007 Mòd Gold Medallist Alasdair Whyte, Tormod MacArthur of Meantime, Norrie MacIver from Bodega – Radio 2 Young Folk award-winners – and Angus MacPhail of legendary dance band Skipinnish.

At the helm of this star-studded crew is well-known musician and broadcaster Mary Ann Kennedy for this second in a series of Highland-wide gigs celebrating the opening of Highland recording studio Watercolour Music’s new home in Lochaber. At the invitation of Highland Homecoming, Watercolour have put together a trail of six events from Thurso to Ardgour featuring artists long-associated with the legendary recording studios along with some like-minded musical friends.

The Watercolour studios are the fulfilment of a lifetime’s career in the recording industry for Mary Ann and Nick. Set in a beautiful open location just a couple of miles from their old home in Ardgour, the new purpose-built studios combine the essence of the original Watercolour with improved technical specification and layout, luxury accommodation and unrivalled views of Ben Nevis and the surrounding area.

With such a big line-up in the band, appearances from Mary Ann & Na Seòid are a relatively rare event, and this special Mòd gig is a unique opportunity to enjoy some mighty craic and some of the finest Gaelic singing around in the Far North. Caithness’s own Gaelic vocal hero, Raymond Bremner – convenor of Mòd Ghallaibh – said, “We are absolutely thrilled that Mary Ann & Na Seòid are supporting Mòd Ghallaibh in this way. Seeing the very finest singers of this young and vibrant generation of Gaels will be a great inspiration to all involved in bringing the Mòd to Caithness.” Calum Ailig MacMillan, Tormod MacArthur and Alasdair Whyte from Mull, all members of Na Seòid, have previously performed several times in Caithness and the North of Scotland as guests of the award-winning Melvich Gaelic Choir. Alasdair Whyte was guest artist at the recent ceilidh-dance in Mey Hall in support of fund raising for the Caithness Mòd.

Mary Ann Kennedy & Na Seòid, Findlay Napier and the Bar Room Mountaineers, the John Goldie Band and the Sorren MacLean Band all contribute to the series of Watercolour nights, with intimate solo and duo gigs, laid-back ceilidhs and house concerts all building up to a spectacular four-band finale at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness on the 27th October.

Tickets for Mary Ann Kennedy and Na Seòid are available from CAITHNESS HORIZONS Tickets for the Eden Court are available from 01463 234234.
