Well today as i turned my xbox on to do some updates i got an error message "This gamer tag has been recovered to a new xbox"

So i done the normal trying to recover it back, entering my live ID details etc etc...still nothing. So i phoned Xbox live and had been asked if i have purchased any microsoft points recently. I said no, not in at least 4 months.

So the nice guy on the phone said " i think you gamer tag has been stolen along with your bank details"

What could i say? I was so shocked! The person that has stolen my bank details has already purchased 10,000 microsoft points which is about £85.

So after being on the phone to the fraud team at microsoft for 2 hours i was told to phone my bank and get it under investigation with them.

Phoned my bank and they told me that it would cost me £10 a week for fraud protection!!! How can i pay that with NO money? So put through to another team who said because i wont pay it will take 6 months+ for the investigation and i cant take money out the account. :~(

I was on the phone to the bank for about an hour. So after that i transferred all my payments and standing orders over to my OH's account.

Then not 5 minutes of being off the phone, i got a call from the bank asking me if i had purchased a TV for £3000. Em no...i really had not! Also more items from the internet up to the value of £2500.

All my money is gone, its athruns birthday in 2 weeks and thats what most the money was for! Luckily i will get the money back but not for up to 6 months!

I could just keep crying! Why me?

What a day!!! :~(

Scum...pure scum!, the git who stole your ID...and also your bank, the scum of the earth.
Maybe you should go and speak to someone face to face at your bank, it might be worth a try.

OMG that is terrible, what a shame on you Shelley.

I would get advice from maybe CAB? They might put a bit of pressure on them to get your money back to you sooner, it isn't fair and it isn't your fault this has happened.

Hope u get it sorted out soon.

That's awful that it will take 6 months! I'm with Natwest (English half of RBS) and I had £550 taken from my account the day before my holiday and they put the money back within 48 hours. I'd say change bank! It's the bank that's robbing you! Also as you had reported fraud already on the account the bank had no right to allow the account to be used further so it is their fault!

I really feel for you - it's stomach churning (and mine was for far less!)

Shelley, really sorry to hear about your dramas.

A good friend of ours had his details stolen using a skimming thingy at a cash machine and there were a lot of items bought using his credit card before he even realised what was going on. He got nowhere until he went into the local branch of his bank in person and spoke with them face to face.

It might be worth trying to speak to the local staff and see if they can take some immediate action on your behalf.

Here's hoping you get some joy.

if this is your bank card details [debit/electron/visa] that has been gathered then you can do chargeback on the lot.

'bank details' ie A/C + sort code is not usually enough to fleece an A/C.

oh and eitherway 6mts is rubbish!
48hrs max

you need to pop up on the www.consumeractiongroup.com (http://www.consumeractiongroup.com)

just ask tugmistress how much they can help you.

Shelley that was a dreadful thing to happen I got an email this afternoo warning me about a Credit Card scam. It is a clever one the caller convinces you it is your card company calling They actually have all your details and numbers except the three on the back that you always require for telephone or online purchases. Because you are convinced it is a genuine call you give them that vital numbers. Did you happen to have had one of these calls recently. At least you know you will get your money back I know you will pull through from reading your posts. And Anthrun will have a great birthday. Keep smiling

Poor Shelley what a shame. You really need to get down to your bank tomorrow and get this sorted face to face. My bank wouldn't have authorised a sale for that amount without prior notification from me. Don't worry you'll get your money back although I don't know why you have to wait 6 months, it's usually a week at the most. My card was used a couple of years ago in a shopping mall in Australia. I didn't know anything about it until my bank telephoned me to ask where I was and then stopped the card when they realised I was in the UK. Don't you worry, Athrun will still have a great birthday no matter what the outcome with the bank, he has you to share it with. Hope everything gets sorted quick. Take care.;)

My god, which bank are you with?
My details where stolen at a cash machine last year. I went to Lidl and my card was declined, thankfully my OH was there and paid. I was still packing the shopping into the car when my bank (Natwest) rang me and asked me if I was in the U.S., I said no of course not I just tried to pay at Lidl. They checked, confirmed the decline and told me somebody was using my details at a cash machine in the U.S., they had drawn out 30 pounds in the morning then 50 pounds at lunch time. They agreed with me to completely cancel my card and send me a new one. Just before they rang me 500 pounds were taken out my account.
I had a new card within 3 days and my money back as well. And I never even knew what was going on, they spotted it and told me.
I had the same when I drew out money in Germany a few years back. Suddenly my card didn't work and my bank rang me. I confirmed that it was me and told them to take Germany off the watch list as I was going there regularly.
Natwest/RBS is also the first bank to change their charges from 38 to 5 pounds from October.

I hope you get it sorted, but certainly get the citizen advise buero involved if you bank insists on 6 months.

Im with TSB, they told me it will take longer because i wont pay for it. Im sorry but i cant afford to pay for it. The money i had was saved for things that are meant to be paid out this week. Thankfully me and my OH was setting up a joint account tomorrow with his bank (RBS).

I will be going in to see my bank too. See what can be done.

I know i will get the money back, but its just the fact the person is still trying to use my details thats really getting to me.

Xbox live are trying to push along the investigation as quickly as possible to redeem what money they can so the bank can get on with it!

I know athrun will still have a great birthday with what we have got for him.

Thanks for all the best wishes guys! Means alot to me.

That's a bit drastic, while you're at it you might as well cancel every bank or credit card you have, as Xbox Live or the PS3 Network are no more open to fraud than any of those, Shelley has just been unlucky, there is no need for mass hysteria with everyone paniking.

Shelley, don't for one minute accept that garbage they are telling you, go down to the branch and fight your corner, and once they have sorted it out, close your accounts and take your business elsewhere. RBS are the best to go with, TSB/Bank Of Scotland, and The Clydesdale are to be avoided like the plague.

Gizmo is right, i was just one of the unlucky ones. I have a PS3 aswell and for all i know the same thing can happen on there! And then we have my OH's Xbox live account aswell.

He is actually going to cancel that account and open a new one just to be safe. Dont care about my xbox account, can easily get another.

This as a golden example of why you should use CREDIT cards for purchases, especially online and not DEBIT cards.

With debit cards your fraud protection is limited to what the bank provides and how it behaves. Shelly's case shows that can be poor.

With credit cards you are protected by the consumer credit act, and upon issuing a chargeback, the money would be returned to your account in days. This not only applies to fraud but items lost in the post/damaged/deffective etc.

I fell victim to fraud last year for around £500. I found a large number of people had fallen to the same scam via an internet forum. All the people who paid by credit card (inc. me)got their money back, all those who paid by switch or visa debit did not.

Get a credit card, use it for everything, pay it off each month to avoid paying interest and you're protection is greater. You also improve your credit rating for when you might need it later - mortgages etc.

TSB has always been a toytown bank and always will be!

This should be resolved within 48 hours max!

Something doesn't add up (along with your A/C right now)
6 Months to investigate unless you pay up!!!!!! WHAT? They are worse than the crooks that stole the ID.

Cards of some description must have been used surely, they can be charged back almost immediately.

£520 a year for insurance!!! and you cannot use in retrospect. So they are saying they can sort it but the want you to buy something first.
I know people that for £500 will get all you money back and the testicles of the scum that fleeced it.

Tell the manager in the morning they have until noon to start getting this resolved or you go to the press for starters.

Shelley - thats horrible!

I'd certainly go into your branch asap. I've been with the TSB for years and think they are great.

I have been the victim of fraud before and my bank manager was great! Money was refunded to me within 24 hours, a new account was set up and all direct debits etc transferred over effortlessly. Daryl certainly made an upsetting experience better!

PS off to tell my son to delete my bank details from his x-box live account!

Thanks for the wishes all!

I have an update, have reset my windows live ID to see if i could recover my gamer tag. I logged on to xbox.com and found the person who has taken my account.

They have changed my gamertag name to SNAKESHOT1. They have already over half the microsoft points curtosy of Moi!

Also, they left a message for me on the account saying "TsGh if you want your account back shelley then come talk to me @ (email addy wont put on here)

Phoned microsoft and emailed all details to them.

The "TsGh" is a gang who steal xbox live details and bank details. They are an awful gang who are commonly known to also get into all your internet details and cancel your broadband if you do not meet their requests.

Im absolutely shocked by this, me and my OH are cancelling our xbox gold memberships and going to silver.

I have not hardly been off the phone today which annoys me cos i hate being on the phone.

Going to see my branch manager at TSB tomorrow at 9am sharp, will be putting my foot down!!! Want and need my money back asap!

Oh Shelley I am so sorry that some scumbag has used your bank details![evil]

Sadly, it is getting all to common nowadays as people get more inventive finding ways to access bank details etc.

My credit card was used fraudulently once but, thankfully, my credit card company spotted it straight away and phoned me to check.

I have now taken out fraud protection through CCP which only costs about £60 per year for the main cardholder and £49 for any additional cardholders.
There is quite a lot included in this including access to credit reports through Experian, identity protection and something called Garlik Patrol which monitors online activity.

You will get your money back Shelley and I am sure it will be a lot sooner than 6 months.

Athrun will have a great birthday as he has a wonderful Mum and money can't buy that!!!!

Take care. xxx

Sorry to hear about your problems. The £10 per week quoted for fraud protection sounds like bollocks to me. Lloyds TSB offer a card protection scheme called Sentinel Gold which has an ANNUAL fee of £30, so why would a tenner a week be required?

Did you contact your local branch or was it the fraud helpline? I would have contacted the specialist helpline, as I believe they would have more expert knowledge than the local branch.

The number to call for debit card theft is listed as follows on the Lloyds TSB website:-

0800 096 9779

This quote from the website should offer you some re-assurance:-

"If you are ever subjected to fraud, our expert operators will put a stop to it as soon as we are aware, as well as ensuring you are reimbursed for any losses incurred through no fault of your own. We will also send you a new card as soon as possible (usually within 48 hours)"

What annoys me isnt the fact that this happens but more the fact that you never hear of the bank getting the money back or tracking down the individuals i mean do they just write off the money as a loss if so why wouldnt it be more proactive (and cost efficient) to track down the hacker and recoup losses as in this case its a group and your not the first or last so imagine the funds were talking about

Otherwise whats there to act as a deterant if there is little come back why dont we all become fradsters over the net and pool our wares and buy us our own org pirate ship somalian style and opperate in the pentland firth ;)

They just have to wait for the money to be refunded, so will need to speak to microsoft again to see whats happening there too.

I have been a victim of identity theft. My replaced & updated credit cards did not reach me. I received a call from my bank that 3 persons were identified as using my credit card for gambling. I replied that it was not me. That situation was shut down and I did not have to pay for any losses. I subscribed to a system offered by my bank called "privacy assist." That program helps me to contend with problems of fraud & identity theft.

I agree with getting a Credit Card for onLine Transanctions but I would actually suggest a PrePaid Credit Card as this way you can not be tempted into Debt. Also if the number is stolen then you can not lose a lot and easy to close and then get a new one.

You can only spend what you have put on your Card, there are no Credit Checks and are simple to get. They also have all the usage of a normal Credit Card. Here is a Link to one of the Better ones :-

http://www.bba.org.uk/content/1/c6/01/30/85/Banking_Code_2008.pdf

It is a PDF File,

Here is a direct quote from the Code section 12.12 :-

If someone else uses your card details without your
permission, and your card has not been lost or
stolen, you will not have to pay anything.

If someone else uses your card details without your
permission for a transaction where the cardholder
does not need to be present (for example, buying
something over the internet), you will not have to
pay anything.

If your card is used before you have received it, you
will not have to pay anything.

I hope this information will help.

Unfotunately microsoft will not tell me what will happen to the person who stole my money or even if they have gone to the trouble to do anything. I even told them their gamer tag and details as they made a silly mistake of contacting me.

Who knows!

Anyways its over :Razz Thank goodness!!

The most important thing Shelley is that you haven't lost any money over this. Glad it's worked out for you. Now you can start on the Christmas shopping.;)
