Floor sander

HI. My sister hired out a sander today for doing her floors in the house that she is moving into. To cut a long story short....it did not work. Does anyone have any good ideas to sanding these floors or advise us on a sander that we can hire that actually works.

Its a horrific job, filthy and deafening. Done it once; wouldn't again, unless contracted. The hardest part is a). Making sure all the nails are punched down so the sanding belts don't tear off at great expense, and b).Making sure the sander doesn't eat right through your floorboards. Also having conquered those two its even harder to sand the edges the big sander don't reach. If you want to leave it as floorboards why not just paint them.
