I know there is already lots to do up here already but..

What... In an ideal world would you like to see come to Caithness.

I think mine would be either a big waterpark, a theme park or a casino, LOL:lol:

Looking at the response here, it would seem that people wish Caithness to become the same as Inverness or any other large town?

Drove the 5 hour round trip to inverness yesterday and the best thing was Maccy D's!!

A car wash would be a good one too.

Distinct seasons instead of all this bliddy rain. Please don't bring theme parks and all the fast food joints up here, I lke the fact that I have to go to Inverness and further for wee treats, it makes them special.

It seems to me that no matter what we had up here we would still complain about it,we live in a very remote place and I for one think we have quite a good selection of things to do.It can be a pain having to go to Inverness for things to do BUT would any of thoses businesses really survive and make profit up here? I think they would crumble and fail very quickly as once you had been a couple of times you would get bored with it x

I wouldn't change things too much. It would be nice to have more things for the kids to do when the weather is bad. We lived near this place www.sensapolis.de when we were in Germany, now something like that would be brilliant here.

Hit the nail on the head there, Thumps.

We'd have to increase the population massively to make most of the ideas on here work. Hence my comment about turning Caithness into Inverness.

A really good way to solve anyones problems with lack of entertainment is .....er....move to Inverness......:Razz

A mobile brothel could do well. It could announce it's arrival in an area with an ice-cream van stylee musical chime.....no business rates, can target the customer base all across Caithness, good profit margins, easy work for some unemployed local girls......

I'm onto a winner here. I wonder if HIE are willing to stump up some cash for the motor?

Sorry to burst your bubble Northener, a good idea but not one that would turn a profit-there's too many good amateurs in Caithness.

I have to say that growing up in Caithness, then and now, I am glad there is no McDonalds, burger king etc..
I found it meant when I did get to have one, it was a treat. I don't know if it is just me but I find I do not really have a taste for fast food burgers etc now, and I think that has to do with the fact of not having it when I was little.

Better swing parks! They seem to be taking away the see-saws, slides and roundabouts. The swings are all broken too or wrapped around the top of the bars.

Kids love swing parks. Gets them out to play and even i like a shot on some of the things. :Razz

I was at the Macdonald Highland Resort in Aviemore today and it was fabulous. I wouldn't expect something like that in Caithness but I would at least like a swimming pool with nice, clean, modern showers that work and somewhere that has a variety of large inflatable things that kids can play on. Caithness has plenty to offer but I have to say with the weather we are sometimes at a bit of a disadvantage. Saying that, all you need to do is dress for the weather and off you go!!

Agree with Shelley about better swingparks, and something involving a soft play area for youngsters too would be good.

Missed Nandos when we came home to Caithness, but their marinade sauces are available now in Co-op and Tesco, so not missing that so much now.

Well to be totally honest i'd love to see a pipeband competition up here. me being a pipeband drummer wont join any pipebands up here cause it's just not fun, like my first year up here a went to John O'Groats to see the pipebands and i went to the Wick drummers to ask when they practise and i was told to come back in September even though i've played before for a grade 1 pipeband and thats for their marching and deportment well lets just say there is room for improvement but hey i know that not everyones perfect but hey enough of my moaning, get a pipeband competition up here and call it The Highland Pipe Band Championships cause i know you'd get alot of money for the competition and if it ever happens just remember it was my idea...

My ideal would be not to change much at all. Caithness is fine as it is apart from the awful public transport links. To change that would, perhaps, change Caithness beyond recognition.

That, in turn, would destroy my joy in negotiating the Berriedale Braes after a few days away from my home county. Whilst I appreciate the many opportunities other parts of the world have to offer, nothing gives me more pleasure than driving over the Ord and knowing that I am, almost, home. :)

You've hit the nail on the head Moira but I have a solution.

What Caithness needs is a brand spanking new four-lane bridge across Loch Calder. It would modernise our transport links beyond recognition but at the same time it wouldn't bring in thousands of the riff raff that this county has lived without for hundreds of years. If the project is successful we could build similar bridges across Loch Watten and Loch More and after that we might even consider similar bridges for the smaller lochs. Do I hear any support for my plan?

I'd like a 6-lane tunnel under the Wester river, please.

And Keiss harbour turned into a Free Port.

And Keiss harbour turned into a Free Port.I'm not sure they would be economically viable but I'll consider your suggestions seriously before submitting my application for funding.

A swing park with more stuff in it, The park at ormlie is very good- the best one in Wick is at Green road but it could do with a lot more in it as theres no much for toddlers.

Something for the older kids would be good also, more facilities like youth clubs as theres an awful lot of kids hanging round bridge street looking bored at the weekends

well definately a bridge to Stroma but they'd probably charge to enter the island which is very beautiful little island, i look at Stroma everyday and it is real beauty

In Wick there should be a very large play park where it has swings, roundabouts, swings for toddlers, a sand pit where kids can dig and play, also a climbing frame, with a skaters park right next to the park and a large wall where kids can do their grafetti, you could also have cctv aswell which is linked to the police station so the kids would be safe.

I've got plenty to do and still can't find the time. Quite happy with what it's got really.

Well said, why try to change it???????? Plenty to do and see albeit getting a bit overcrowded. However still a few open spaces without caravans, huts ect.,, don't need casinos and all that jazz about play whatever in the hangars, the younger generation have been totally spoilt already.

Scrabster Harbour is being re-developed in a different way - they are concentrating more on the business side, oil, renewables, cruise ships.

Dog you are a fellow of infinite taste (or was it jest?).

A bit of tweaking.

2: include three establishments in Wick

5: Dump the premier footie team and replace with something interesting.....

Apart from that, it's an excellent mix that will appeal to all.:Razz

Caithness is great as it is, I never have enough time to do all the things I want to do, neither does any of my family or grandsons find enough time in the day to take part in all the activities they would enjoy. But having said that what I would really like to see is an indoor sports centre similar to what they have in both Orkney and Shetland. What a difference that would make to the county. I wouldn't care too much about where it was situated as people would all be willing to travel to it. Was there not mention some time back about some sort of indoor centre being set up in Halkirk by an Andrew Sinclair?

Continuing on Rhegheads theme - one thing that we are lacking, that the rest of the UK has, is a Coastal Footpath.

Go to England or Wales and you can near as dammit walk around the coast, taking in all the spectacular scenery, unhindered. Because we have 'the right to roam' in Scotland, there has never been many established footpaths in the Far North.

So what happens at present is that although theoretically you can walk anywhere, in reality you cannot. As you are met with barbed wire topped sheep netting every 100 yards.

It wouldn't cost much (in the greater scheme of things) to open up a footpath from Helmsdale all the way round to Durness with waymarkers and stiles where necessary. The benefits to Tourism would be many and locals would be keen to use it...I know i would, I'm hacked off with ripping me walking trousers to bits on wire....

I really like that idea - we love walking but not so much the clambering over barbed wire :)
