This is not the best picture of Small Wainscot as the moth was not very co-operative but is in complete contrast to the Convolvulus Hawkmoth which it was along side in my trap on the 1st. One of our smallest moths it is only about 12mm long. It is common thoughout the UK particularly in marshes and other damp areas. It does not eat as an adult. It overwinters as a larva feeding within the stems of sedges, cottongrass and other grasses. The adult should be on the wing for the rest of this month.
