Take the hard drive with XP on and shove it in the new lappy!
It might just scrape through.

Otherwise a tad difficult to install XP over Vista.

Vista, the devils work.

i take it you want your data from the old hdd to be available on your new vista pc?
if it is that you do not like vista and want to revert back to xp on the new pc, then you can click the button to make vista look like xp.

wnat is it you want to do?

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'd would as some suggest have swapped the old drive into the new computer but the connections aren't the same (and its only 60GB). My real issue is that I have several specialised programmes that I don't have the set up disks. Also the old disk is from a computer that has now died so I'm getting an external 2.5" USB drive bay so may try somethings after that.

I'll post up any success!

Continued thought welcome:roll:

when my comp got fried with the lightning beginning july i took out the old HD (was on windows xp pro) and got one of those external casings for it from pc world. the new comp is running (p)ista and it just plugs in via usb cable and acts as another external drive i can access - i've transported some programmes across that way that i no longer have discs for :) it cost about £30 for the casing :D

Connections aren't the same! ?

Your gonna struggle a little with any programs you don't have the software for, without the setup disks they aren't going to be transferred easily.

You may have to consider dropping your old drive into a comparable desktop machine until you find some suitable software.
I think you may struggle trying to use it via USB as it will be treated as storage and some programs wont function.

Most likely the old one is an IDE ribbon cable interface and the new one is SATA

True but not impossible :D

Unfortunately XP doesn't like too many changes in hardware at once, so unless The Doctor got an almost identical specification system it's likely to keel over during startup.

True, but I have had some success with this.
Even fully recovered a lappy HD that was according to a large specialist co' completely ed.
Said lappy was dropped by wifey but now sees useful life albeit looking a bit rough round the edges.:D

Trick is to use a basic system and have a couple of driver disks available, drop it into safe mode and get enough running on it to connect to tinterweb and then you can download the rest.

It can always be a slave drive but then the programs he needs may not run, but worth a shot.

Or what are the programs? Surely they'll be available somehwhere on the web.

i used to hate vista until the released a service pack 2 for it now i quite like it never get any problems from it.
The easy way is just swap hardrives but its when u go to updates u might not get them because your new laptop spec wont be the same as your old laptop so windows update might see you as having an illegal copy of it?
If u hate vista that much it might be easier to just get windows 7 u might get it for nothing if u have just bought ure laptop
