View Full Version : What will happen with Tescos old store?

I have just been reading the story on Tesco getting planning permission for their new store, at the old mart site in Thurso, on the front page of the courier. It also states that Tesco have 'made it clear it intends selling off its existing base in the town once the new venture comes on stream'.

What do you think will go there next? We certainly wont need another supermarket once the new Tescos is open!

I think the council should buy the old store (or Tesco should dontate it to the town!) and turn it into a sports centre. Its in a good location with the rugby pitches behind, dammies accross the road and tennis and squash courts near by. It already has ample parking and the store itself is large enough to create baminton/volleyball/basketball courts that could also be used for a variety of other puposes such as gymnastics, keepfit classes etc, etc. It could also have a fitness/health suite, changing rooms and such like.

What do you think??

doubt they would be interested and i doubt very much tesco would sell it to asda.

What a good idea, it could also be used for coffee mornings since folk have lost the town hall, so much could be incorporated into the building to serve everyone, you should put your idea to the council you never know they might just listen.

I heard Woolworths are buying it.

I think ter21wat idea is a great one! something like that would really benefit the community. Orkney has the pickquoy centre which has proved a success, something like that would be great but i'd say it would be a bit out of price range.

Saying that though, Isn't Halkirk meant to be getting some kind of sports centre?

I was under the impression that they are turning it into some sort of training facility for Tesco staff. Not sure where I remember reading it, but it seems like a decent enough idea. It obviously wont become another supermarket - Tesco aren't going to sell a decent sized piece of land to Asda or Morrisons. And I don't think the council will buy it or Tesco will donate it - it is in a good position and is quite large so is probably relatively expensive as land goes up here.

Not a snowballs chance in hell of that happening. Have you not read about the massive cuts in budget that the local council are facing?, it's a great idea, but pretty unrealistic. Plus, would Caithnesians actually bother to use it?, i have my doubts, Thurso has the cinema and bowling alley, and long before it turned in to a stinking run down dump it was not widely used, i was there countless times sitting in a near empty room, and that was at the weekend. After the novelty wore off, most people just drifted back to the pub to get blootered, it's what Caithnesians do best.

The council won't be interested in making it into a sports centre (why should they anyway?) but I could see a fitness chain like Cannons buying it.

seriously though, we could do with something like that, as there really is nothing up here for the young ones, mayby not a go kart track but something else everyone could enjoy, it would make a grand ice rink.

Privately run Ice-Rinks just don't make money anymore, and no way would it make a profit in a place like Caithness, there are just not enough people justify opening an Ice-Rink up here. I remember a news item about it not that long ago, it was about several Ice-Rinks in Glasgow closing down and that potential Olympic hopefuls had nowhere to train, and if i remember the news item correctly, I believe there is now only 1 Ice-Rink in Glasgow.

I will go the H.C. route but I need to prove I have a load of money in the bank and could afford to buy it without H.C. help, then they'll fund it in it's entirity from the public purse. H.C. have been known in the past to help large businesses that didn't need the cash.

Isn't that how it works? ;)

Thats exactly what I was thinking - more a multi use facility that could be used for sports, concerts, exhibitions etc, with a soft play area and a cafe. Something like the Pickaquoy centre in Orkney and the Clickimin centre in Shetland. Something that could be used by the whole community rather than a dedicated facility like an ice rink or go gart track which would lose it novelty very quickly.
My parents come down with the shetland junior badminton team every year for tournament against Caithness and other areas and they have to play the one age group in Wick school and the other age group in Thurso school - a facility like this would mean being able to have the whole tournament in one location.
I no theres no way it would happen but it would be great if it did - no harm in dreaming!! :D
