I always get very suspicious when there are irish men in van pulling up on the drive trying to sell you various power tools, i have had a bad experience in the past where after one visit by these type of salesmen that my garden shed was emptied of its power tools, might be pure coincidence but i always tend to lock up everything after i see that they are about, i dont want to tar all irishmen with the same brush but once bitten twice shy.

just to inform everyone on the org that the irish salesmen are about as they pulled up trying to flog me a generator for 450 that you can buy at W D Rossfor 150, to my advantage i had one already the exact same...lol.

so everything will be getting locked up tonigh just in case...

I am not sure if it was the same guy, but I had an Irish man at the door about 2 years ago wanting to sell me a generator and despite me telling him several times that I already have one that I have never used since buying new (another bargain I could not resist) he still pumelled me with his sales pitch.

When I told him I would be interested in buying a chain saw as mine had broken he turned tail and headed off muttering to himself as if he thought I was taking the mick (no punn intended).

He was a tidy looking bloke in a posh 4x4, BMW I think

We had this guy up to the house two years ago, asking would we like to buy tools or his last generator he had in the van, i went to ask hubby, his answer was "NO and tell we are not interested", so off i go, "hubby not interested"!!........... "awww but my dear tis a grand price and ye'll no get it cheaper anywhere else, tell him just come and have a look and make me an offer" he said. So off i go back to hubby blah blah blahi........... NOPE hes still not interested.... So his next tactic was, "come and have a look yersel, tell me what you think, you can make me an offer" nowwwwww what the heck do i know about generators, he said "I sell it usually for £450 but if you make me an offer i wil sell it to you. OK i said "will you take £50 cash"? the last i saw of him he took off down the road, dog barking after him, and dust rising off the ground. lol

They are in Halkirk by the way, well at least they were last night, with a horsebox in tow!!!! I was out walking my dog, and one of them stopped me with some rather polite chat about my wee jack russell! Smartly dressed, quite attractive with the real irish banter and patter, then he said he had a lovely leather suite for sale!!! I can see how some people could be taken in by these guys, and I'm a sucker for an irish accent myself, but be firm and stand your ground! I can't imagine how they got a leather suite in the back of a horsebox! It was a new horsebox to be fair!!!

Coming back from the shop this morning, a bloke in a white van pulled up and asked if i wanted to by any carpets or beds, he didn't have an Irish accent though, more the pity, as i have some unfinished business with one of these Irish Van Traders.

Y'all might be confusing these Irishmen with locals: the Norn Iron accent does sound similar to the Caithness one.

well pepsi i think it might have had something to do with the grey VW van they were driving with irish number plates, and speaking with an irish accent....lol, that is what gave it away.

Are you suggesting Caithness people don't have an aptitude for deception?

We have a great system over here in Western Isles - to go to any door selling things you have to have a licence and it takes 3 months to get!!

If any of these folk come off the ferries before very long they are reported to Police or Trading Standards, who work together, vehicles searched - most of them play baseball as they always have baseball bats in their vehicles - nice and handy in the front footwell, so be warned!

They are escorted off to await the first ferry and police are there to ensure they are on it when ferry eventually sails.

Works really well - very few of them bother coming over here now - word has got around.

Police double check all their vehicle documents and everything in the vehicle - last year the police stopped a white van outside my house and gave them an extremely good questioning and search, followed by the Trading Standards folk - over 2 hourse they were there then escorted to the ferry terminal

not that good a deception, no i think they would not go that far, people up here are too trusting, thats why they come from ireland and prey on our good nature

We had a couple of Irish guys here yesterday in a Blue van trying to sell power tools. We're always suspicious of them as we know they're usually just scouting around your property to see what they can come back for.
The dogs were out though so they had to park at the top of the drive and hubby went up to them. Told em no thanks and they backed off.
Don't think they'll attempt to come down the drive alone though, there's a big sign making them aware of loose dogs and they'll certainly not let them in.

There was an Irish bloke at my door last night selling leather furniture, they also had a young boy with them going door to door also, they were in a red transit. I just told them i didn't have any money. That seemed to get rid of him quick enough.

Can't help thinking if you replaced "Irish" with "Black" this post would be deemed totally unacceptable.

As for Pepsi's point, I am assuming these guys had Southern Irish accents.

yes i would totally agree
although i do find this very amusing
1)pepsi's norn iron -ive only ever heard SOUTHERN IRISH come out with that one,so,sorry found that funny not sure that cathnesians would no that one!!
2)seems like all irish men are getting a very bad name here
3)doubt it very much they'd be happy if they seen that
4)and yes i'd trust these guys with nothing not even a jack russell they are keen on stealing those too
5)they seem to be here in their droves although i did see a white irish reg van with a fairly new horsebox in tow heading south on the a9 this morning
6)i would say i know that these are travellers/chancers and not purely irishmen as put!!!!!!
7)and i would say that their accent is norn/southern iron english if ya like rolled into one,
8)so.................YES BLACK/IRISH IF THATS HOW YOU PUT IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE:mad:

Worked at a quarry many years ago and were unundated in the summer with the "fly by nighters" wanting any "free" or "left over" tar. As it was all made in batches for each specific job to exact measurements by the tar squad managers there was never any left-overs. They wouldn`t take a telling, but my hound used to snarl and see them off very speedily.

Caithness folk are very trusting............ that is what makes this a special place to live.... but once bitten, twice shy, trusting or not.

yes i agree caithness folk are very trusting,so is the irishmen or irish as a whole, thats one of the many things irish/cathnesians have in common............................
however when you say fly by nighters do you actually mean fly by nighters or what the topic is irish men wouldnt trust them, cos really anyone could be fly by nighters, ill have you know they are all over the world and including here cathness too,cos really what you mean is ie topic- travellers/itinerants/chancers/fly by nighters, not irishmen as a whole!!!!!!

Well, if it was a van full of black guys turning up doors then what would be wrong with saying so?

If they are Irish then what the hell is wrong with saying so?

They are probably southern Irish as opposed to Norn Irn. The clue is normally the speed with which they speak. The southern have a faster lilt than the Ulstermen and are a lot harder to understand wheras the caithness accent is similar to our northern comrades.
If they come to your door would it be politically incorrect to tell them to "Bog off" ?;)

NAH,i still say it could be seen as very offensive, because whats actually happening is that all irish men are been tared with the same brush as travellers/itinerants/chancers/fly by nighters i mean you could do the same we highlanders/lowlanders geordies/english doubt if they'd be happy.NO there is nothing wrong with saying van full of black/irish men although it would be politiculy correct to say coloured rather than black and less offensive to say travellers rather than irish!!!!As for the accent my very strong opinion would say that no the norn iron accent isnt really that similar but how-ever when you say southern irish as in connaucht or even munster there is a strong similarity;)
My advice would be in future phone the police give reg plate etc etc cos its highly unlike that these travellers/itinerants/chancers/fly by nighters have tax, insurance, even a license and also id be extremely surprised if they did have a TRADING LICENSE!!!!:)

Talking of black Irish men, I was very supprised to read in the P&J today that Muhammad Ali is in Ireland just now to visit the ancestral home of his great grandfather Abe Grady, who emegrated to the US in 1860 and married a freed African slave.

well i am hebridean and you dont see me going off on one because someone called me scottish, no, well all i said is that some persons from the green isle (IRELAND) wether it be north or the south i dont really care, they all come from that island, any way that is off the topic, they were travelling IRISHMEN, trying to sell me powertools, i was only trying to let others on the org know that rouge tradesmen were about as they not got a licence to trade as YES i did ask, they looking for a quick sale to get cash. and no they were not black
