Hi can anyone tell me the names of the opticians in Wick and where they are please.

Its Duncan & Todd and is on Thurso Street. Just along from the Co-op. Wick 603447

If you can get to Inverness, I'd advise going to somewhere like Optical Express rather than the one in Wick. D&T is very very expensive, and I found them to be very unprofessional.

Specsavers are very good & due back up here soon. You tend to get buy one get one free offers & staff are very nice

Eye tests are free in Scotland.

Get your eyes tested but buy the specs off the internet, so much cheaper. Or wait until Specsavers visit Caithness.

Most people, I would think, go to an optician because they feel that there sight is worsening. Therefore they are probably going to need to buy glasses, and D&T are ridiculously expensive.

As Jox says, get the prescription from D&T and the glasses from somewhere cheaper.

Your original advice - to avoid D&T - is misleading at best.

Will give them a ring.

Got a leaflet in the post today. Specsavers are going to be in the Weigh Inn, Thurso from Mon 31st until Wed 2nd Sep and Assembly Rooms, Wick on Thu 3rd Sep & Fri 4th Sep. Number to book app is 0845 223 9224

Don't be melodramatic. If it's misleading at best, your suggesting it's what? Malicious at worst? Really, I think D&T operate a dreadful service up here and I would not go near them with a bloody humongous barge poll. As someone else said, they have expensive glass frames and their opticians aren't particularly good. I went there and the glasses I got had the wrong lenses in each eye. And seeing as my left eye is almost twice as bad as my right the glasses were not very useful. They are useless. I was not misleading - I said to avoid it, and with good reason.

 When Gerry O'Brien was the optician in Wick his examination, fitting and after sales service was excellent. Unfortunately he has now retired and the new service can be a bit hit or miss.

I have tried one of the 1 hour services in Inverness and was not impressed with the service, end product or price.

Come on out of retirement Gerry. You are younger than me and I have 5 years to do yet!![disgust]

Your original response said to avoid it because they are expensive, never mind that the OP had not stated anything about using them to buy anything. Now you're telling us to avoid it for a completely different set of reasons?

I do wish people could be honest and up front at least.

I've no experience of the opticians in Wick, but it might be a good idea to get him to ask his Diabetic Nurse to recommend an optician. I'm not too sure of the thoroughness of SpecSavers when dealing with the diabetic eye. ;)

I know G. Henderson in Thurso does a good job, even takes retinal photographs. Takes 3 months to get an appointment though.

He will have proper screening for that at the hospital

Yep he will indeed, and a cracking service they provide also.

G. Henderson does the retinal photographs as a standard part of the eye test though, I believe. As far as I'm concerned, you can never get your retinas photographed too often. ;)

They had a bad history of service with me before I went to O'Briens in Wick, now sadly retired,

Do you still have to get laser'd every so often?

Do you still have to get laser'd every so often?

That depends on the outcome of your retinal scan.

Seemingly the patterns in the retina can give clues to problems elsewhere in the body.

Do you still have to get laser'd every so often?

Nope, Consultant is very happy with the way my retinal scar tissue has healed/formed. No more laser for me!

*fingers crossed*

Now the important thing is to keep the diabetes under control, to stop the retinopathy happening again in the future.

If it does return, I'm not sure they can blast me with any more laser as I've had more than the recommended limit per eye as it is. If they laser your retina too much, the scar tissue that forms ends up contracting as it ages, and pulls the retina off the back wall of your eye.

Which obviously isn't a good thing. ;)

Thanks for your interest buddy. Hope I've now bored the paps off ye. :D

Tried quoting M but getting message too short so separate reply.

Q If you get your eyes lasered does it correct your vision.

buddyrich
19-Aug-09, 23:06
I had a scar tissue problem after i passed a kidney stone. Basically, skin healed over a spot that needs to be open, making it practically impossible for me to pass water.

Yeah, it was sore. However the specialist in raigmore was not intimidated by such things. They knocked me out, stuck a camera up there and sliced the excess scar tissue out. Now i can think of waterfalls, firehoses and rushing rivers and all is well.

The Mad Dogg is up for the reunion, so we just have to get Cleft and Metal God on board. Then the world is ours.

It's different from cosmetic laser surgery, such as advertised on the TV. In that process, they laser your lens, at the front of your eye.

If Diabetics have retinopathy, they laser the retina, which is at the back of your eye. If you get your retina lasered, your eyesight is worsened because the area that is lasered loses all the rods and cones that change the light into electrical impulses that are fed to the brain. Scar tissue then forms as the 'burn' heals.

Plus it all depends on which area of your retina needs lasered. I'm lucky in that my central vision hasn't been affected much, but my peripheral vision has, quite a bit. I canna see oot the corner of my eye very well!

You still on the needle or you on the pen now?

Metalattakk
19-Aug-09, 23:52
Still on the needle. The option to inject just fast-acting insulin on its own if it's required, rather than a hybrid of fast and slow-acting, is what makes the difference to me.

I'm sure they'll nag and nag me into changing. Not yet though. ;)

buddyrich
20-Aug-09, 00:03
They'll convince you eventually. Prepare for major faffing about when you make the change. My old man got to grips with it eventually, the actual injections are much quicker and easier but the combination of the daytime quick-release and nighttime slow-release is a bit of hassle for him now he's retired and not using the same carbohydrates.

Got my eyes mixed up. The macula is on the left of optic disk, so it is definitely the right eye.

Might it have to do with the wee bulbous tab on the upper right of the outline? I'm presuming on the left eye 'photo, the wee tab would be on the left side.

From what I know of eye biology, I don't think that's true. I go by the optic disk and macula. If the optic disk is on the left of the macula then it is a left eye, and if it is on the right it is the right eye. That was how I was taught anyway.

Pity you can't differentiate between a single yellow line that runs along a kerb and a single yellow line that goes over a step - ie Queens Street Station in Glasgow. I don't think I should have laughed so hard about that but it still makes me laugh now - hee hee:lol:

Quite why they would paint the edge of a step on the edge of a road the same colour as a line on the road I have no idea. Anyway, I was still recovering from laser surgery, so my eyesight wasn't quite as good as it might have been.

Thanks for ripping the pish though, m'dear. Shall we mention the "elephant's egg incident" now?

Now there's dishes that need doing, and my shirt needs ironed. Don't let me hold you back now, wifie. :Razz
