The identification of this Small Clouded Brindle, caught in my garden in June, has now been verified and is the first record for Caithness and probably for the Highands. Previously it was thought to range only as far north as Aberdeenshire. It is one of a handful of moths and butterflies recorded for the first time in the County in recent years which are presumably extending their ranges because of climate change. The moth flies in late May and early June. One of its preferred habitats is damp grassland and it feeds on the flowers of rushes, so there is plenty of habitat available in Caithness. What other "new for the County" species are there out there to find?
