Has anyone had any experience of either building a log home or researching the building of a log home that wants to share any best practice or advice??

Thanks

What kind of log home? Round or square log? Machined or hand crafted? Insulated or not? As a main residence, holiday home or storage building?

thanks to those that have posted me PMs.

Stefan - round log - main residential home - unsure on rest - just at the ideas stage.

had previously enquired with council about building one on our land for holiday home they weren't impressed - this would be on a different bit of ground as main home - but they said they didn't want everyone to go building them and they couldn't have verandas or over hangs....but to me thats what they are all about - seems a lot of negativity over nonsense...might be a non starter.

I don't. I was once on holiday for a few days in a log home. It was bloody freezing, the wind seemed to get in no matter how many curtains you closed, or long things you put at bottoms of doors were put down. I'm still shivering now, and that was a few years ago.

Admittedly that was in Norway in winter, so...

My understanding is that it is a very specialised undertaking. As the logs dry the twist and there is an art to make the logs twist together. Not sure if there would be many people in the UK with the right experience.

Probably a cheapo build if it was a holiday place. My home is so snug that my heating bill is only £250 per year.

I know that Caithness planning is fairly hostile to log houses, preserving the vernacular proverbial and all that.
