My hubby has a Dell Laptop - just bought a few weeks ago, but he has no idea how to use it!
It has Windows Vista running on it - I'm not used to Vista or laptops, so I'm a bit stuck here! I installed Zonealarm and AVG Antivirus for him, and everything was working fine. I have the same installed on my PC.
I had it set up to use a wireless connection in the house. My own computer uses the same BB connection, which is with Wanadoo, using the Livebox.
My computer is fine, Windows XP, connection is perfect and web pages are perfect.
My hubby can't access the internet on his laptop at all - it was all working fine. When I check the connection, it tells me that it is connected. But when we try to access web pages, it just says that the page can't be displayed.
Can anyone tell me how to get web pages back for him? I'm fine with my own computer, but I'm not used to his one, and I have no idea what he's done to it!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

have you tried loading google.co.uk for example ? try a few different pages.

Your laptop it connected to the live box wirelessly ? , if so try it with an ethernet cable into the router \ modem and see if you get any results.

On the laptop, if you go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt you will get a black box with white text.

Type ipconfig /all and press Enter. It shuld look a little like this:

Can you go to Start->All Program->Accessories->Command Prompt again on the laptop and type:

1. ping 192.168.1.78 and press Enter. What is the result?
2. ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter. What is the result?
3. ping 216.239.59.104 and press Enter. What is the result?
4. ping www.google.co.uk (http://www.google.co.uk) and press Enter. What is the result?
5. In the browser, go to http://216.239.59.104 in the address bar.

What firewall are you using, if any?

I only have Zone alarm set up.

Turn Zonealarm off (completely) and try them again. If that doesn't work, uninstall Zonealarm, reboot and try it again.

Before you do that - he hasn't told Zonealarm to block all traffic has he?

As Paul will tell you I know "nowt about owt", however this sounds familer.

A freind had the same issue and it was his older router was not compatable with Vista.

He took his laptop to a neighbour's house and it worked fine on there router and after much poking, proding and reading they found out it was the router.

I would ring up Wanadoo and get them to sort it out....

Does your router have a configuration page? Can you view that from the laptop?

KCI

Sorry - getting a bit technical for me now!
I'm not sure how to get to the configuration page from the laptop. I'm just using the Livebox as usual, and nothing was installed on the laptop, as it just picked up the wireless connection from the Livebox...

Can you go to http://192.168.1.1 from the desktop and see if you get a page asking you to login? If you do, can you also try it from the laptop and see if you get the same page?

Can you also completely uninstall Zonealarm?

KCI
18-Jul-09, 22:31
When I go to that address on the desktop, I get the log in page.
When I try from the laptop, I get the usual message about page not being displayed.
I've completelly uninstalled ZoneAlarm, just restarting.
Oh, you're not going to believe this - I have webpages again!
So, it must have been ZoneAlarm causing the problem?
I wonder why, because it was all working fine before, and it's the same programme I use on my desktop. Should I download it again, or try something different?

blueivy

I was pretty sure ZoneAlarm was the problem as when you disabled it you could use the ping command I sent through. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a router thing before you uninstalled it.

The problem is either that port 80 was being blocked by Zonealarm - port 80 is the port that is used for communication between you and a website OR Zonealarm was blocking anything from your browser from going out the way. Using another browser would have confirmed this.

I'd advise reinstalling Zonealarm and resetting it's configuration back to a basic / start / factory default installation and then work from there. If you just put it back on without doing that it may pick up on the previous configuration that was on the computer (that was blocking web pages) and do exactly the same thing again.

At least now you know what's causing it!

OK - I'll do that.

Paul, thank you so much for your help! I would never have thought of Zonealarm causing the problem, so would have spent many a night trying to sort it out!
It's hard work trying to fix my hubby's mistakes! I think I spend more time trying to sort him out than I do with Baby KCI!

Thanks again - much appreciated. :D
