What a lovely evening. :D

It was so nice to sea the harbour busy and lots of people wandering around enjoying the atmosphere.

I just watched the younger kids showcasing their talent and it was great. Well done to all of them.

The boats in the marina look so pretty and its nice to see so many of them. I hope this is the start of something good for the harbour. :)

Good for you Aaldtimer. When I logged on here tonight and saw three different threads asking questions about the Harbour Fest, I was actually beginning to wonder if there was anyone left with the capability to open their eyes and read the information about the event which has been available for quite some time.

Anyhow I digress - it was an absolutely beautiful evening here in Wick following an exceptionally warm, sunny day. The haar did not descend upon the harbour (as I had feared).

As an onlooker, I thought that the opening night of the Festival went perfectly. The boats floated, the speakers spoke, the choir sang, the Queen reigned supreme, ably assisted by her attendants (including WeeSparkle, who sparkled). :D

All in all, the perfect start to what I hope is the perfect weekend for everyone involved in this great event. Well done to you all!

What a fantastic spectacle, all the people involved in making this weekend happen can be proud of their efforts.:Razz

I did a video clip of the flotilla coming into the harbour and I cant upload it because Photo bucket will only allow 100 MB per clip and it is about 157 MB (about 17 minutes) and as yet I have not learned how to edit clips.:(

I am sure there will be plenty of clips posted just now for the many people that would have liked to have been in Wick tonight, but where not able to be.

What I found surprising was although it was a relatively calm evening, the boats that were queuing as they were coming into the outer harbour were being thrown about like corks and was a good example to us non sea fairing folk of just what a difficult and dangerous job the herring fishing industry was.

Once again, well done all and we look forward to the rest of the weekend.

ahem and Weesparkles mum ;) who may I add waved like an idiot when the boat went round nearly knocking my two younger kids in the water.

Only joking well done to everyone involved the start of a good weekend I hope. :D

The first in a series of photographic exhibitions showcasing the Wick Society’s historic Johnston collection will open in the run-up to Harbourfest.

The foyer of Pulteneytown Parish Church will be the venue for a display of large-format images of Argyle Square and adjoining streets in years gone by. Entitled Argyle Square and Neighbourhood, it will run from Wednesday, June 24, until Saturday 27th. Wed - Fri 10am - 4pm and Saturday 10am - noon. Free entry
There will be a further Johnston exhibition that Saturday, the 27th in a marquee at Harbourfest, entitled Johnston and the Harbour – again in large format.

The St Fergus Gallery will host the third exhibition – Johnston Revisited – over a three-week period in July, from Saturday 4th to Thursday 23rd. This will also incorporate an original tripod camera. These exhibitions will be an excellent opportunity to see some wonderful examples in large format of the genius of the Johnston’s.

Prints will be available for sale in a range of sizes from A4 up to A1 at all three exhibitions, which are being organised by the Johnston section of the Wick Society

Keep your eyes open tomorrow folks.

Hi Bruce H

The couple of clips that I have managed to upload are at the crowning ceremony but unfortunately I am near the back and had to hold my camera above the crowed, point it and hope for the best.lol

My camera is only a very small, one hand held device and although the zoom is very good and the audio is Ok it is not easy to hold steady unless leaning on something so please forgive the shaky bits.

The one I did of the flotilla of boats coming into the harbour and the with the Queen and her escorts doing a couple of laps of the harbour has come out very well because I was able to lean on the railings and steady myself, but because it is 17 minutes long I have not been able to upload yet.:confused

I think you will find that on that link the only section that states starting times dates back to 2007!

I don't tend to buy local papers that often and usually rely on the org for my local info!

I do see however that the start times have now been added to the front page of the org, so have now been enlightened!

Thought i was asking a fair enough question!

The link only details about parking and bout the ceremony that was going take place. It did not have what i wanted to know and that was what it was, where its orgins are and what was going to happen at it. I read the link twice but i mustve not seen the links for the programme.

Vistravi its a celebration of Wick's Maritime History. This is the second Harbor Fest. This year they have incorporated local Lifeboat Day as well. Display's, lots to see and do and stalls selling almost anything from food to rubber boots.
Here is a link to the last one to let you see what it's about. This year's is much bigger and had a Herring Queen crowning last night. The first herring Queen to be crowned for 56years. Hope that gives you a better picture

I dont think any of the helpers/volunteers got paid for their days work. I didn't nor did any one else I know. Some worked friday night setting up and started very early Saturday morning. It was a long day but as always I really enjoyed it. I would like to give praise to Wick lifeboat crew who cooked beefburgers all day in that heat, and John taylor our chairman and his wife anne who had an early start and the others who set up the stalls etc.
I thought it was a very moving moment when, after the service today, the boats were leaving and circled around the outer harbour as they left, crowds were lined along Braehead and the harbour waving and shouting haste ye back. the boats were sounding their horns and the crews were waving. Very touching indeed, and I'm sure they will go home with very good tales of wick.
Alice in Blunderland, wee sparkle looked really lovely, does she get to keep the dress!!

Well, my family and I had a great time over the weekend, at the Habourfest, and it was well worth the money we spent.
My eldest had a great time going on all the boats, and my 19 week old baby loved all the noise and people!
Met up with loads of people we haven't seen for ages, took loads of photos, and had a good laugh at my husband's red face, as he got slightly sunburnt!
Thanks to all the organisers etc - brilliant weekend, and great to see so many people there. :)

and thanks to all who got well paid for their time

Think we have made everybody's view's clear on this already, let's give credit where credit is due 99.9% of the workers/organisers a big well done and can we have another one next week as those of us working at it never got to see most of it. On a more serious note there was a lot of money raised for local charities/organisations, we got the new marina on the map which can only help caithness, loads of people had a great day out and there was a few hangovers thrown in as well. Not only weekers were involved in the work, there were lots of people from much farther afield as I spoke to people from Thurso (ok not far but worth a mention), Buckie, Portsoy, Macduff and a guy from north England setting up/taking down stalls. The boat crews came from Wick(goes without saying)the swan Lerwick the Reaper Anstruther, smaller boats came from Livingston, portsoy, lossimouth, and a variety of other places that I didn't get to speak to, some visitors came in and didn't know the Harbourfest was on but just joined in due to the atmosphere.
Did anybody get the photo of wee sparkle stamping and girning because she didn't get to steer the boat this time?.

I can't understand why anyone is complaining about the admission fees. I have three children, one of whom is under five. I had to pay £5 to get in. £5 for four hours entertainment - not bad at all as far as I am concerned. I had an excellent afternoon and the children were delighted with all the boats and dancers etc.

To put it into perspective, had I taken the children to the cinema, it would have cost me about £23 to get in and then I would have been ransacked for popcorn etc. and I would have been out in less than 2 hours. I would also have had £5 in diesel to go to Thurso. Alternatively, I could have gone to the crazy golf and trampolines and paid £7 for about 30 minutes entertainment.

For those who are complaining - get a grip, you don't get much for £5 in 2009 and to get a day like that for £5 we were doing VERY well. Go and whinge about something worth whinging about.

I would also like to add that the organization that went into the fest was nothing short of fantastic, and must have taken a great deal of time and effort. Any payments was well worth every penny. It would be a sad day for Wick if the organizers were to step down from this task because of negative response from a very small selection of moaners. Who else could do it so well? Who else would even consider taking such a mammoth task on?
I say they deserve our admiration and applause, not criticism. And as for having to pay a SMALL fee to get in - come on, where else in the country would you get a day like that for so little? You even have to pay more than that to look at a ruined castle now further south!
for goodness sake pull together and help your community and stop whinging (you know who you are)
rant over.

I can say that it was a really excellent weekend.
My only hope now is that it becomes an annual event, instead of the bi-annual event it currently is.
Judging by the turn-out at the weekend, it would be rather silly not to do this.
A few of the visitors I spoke to have said it was a better weekend than the Portsoy Traditional Boat Festival. Now THATS a compliment!!!

I went along to the Harbourfest with my children and my mother, we all had a very good time and it was great to see the harbour full of boats and looking busy again, I took loads of photos and even ventured onto the pontoons. We spent ages walking round and round taking it all in. Well done to all the organisers and everybody else who took part.

I'd also like to add how impressed I was with all the children's artwork from the four local schools.
