I've been watching the Crimewatch Roadshow these past few mornings and am truly amazed when someone actually recognises a face from the CCTV footage. The pictures are usually appalling- grey, grainey and often at the wrong angle. If the criminal stares straight into the lens, maybe a blurry image is visible, but even they are so poor. In this day and age, when there are magnificent pictures taken of the moon from earth, very acceptable phone videos from Iran and fantastic webcam picures of birdnests, surely technology nowadays can produce a sharp, clear, undeniable likeness making it impossible for the perpetrator to say "it wisnae me".

It's not the availability of technology, it's the price. If you spend enough you can get wonderful quality, but most places don't. The deterrent effect of a dummy camera will only cost you a few quid!

That said, I am amazed by how good the quality sometimes is on crime footage. It has improved vastly in just the last few years.
