Hi, can anyone help. My pc has been very slow, this past week. I keep getting a message popping up, something about Google installer cannot something or other! Anyway i searched online, and found some others have been looking for help with the same problem. It is seemingly something called a rootkit, some kind of malware. I've tried a couple of malware removal programs, but no joy. Anyone else found a solution to this, cheers.

Make sure your antivirus is upto date with the definition files and get it to do a scan before booting into windows. If you don't currently have any antivirus, I recommend Avast Antivirus (http://www.avast.com) home edition.
Run anti-malware/spyware tools like malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/)and spyware search and destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html).

Google Updater is installed when you have any of the Google programs on your computer (Google Toolbar, Google Chrome etc.).

This may well be a very normal error and on the basis of what you've said above it's a huge jump to have a rootkit installed. Creating a rootkit isn't easy which is why there are so few of them compared to other malware. Actually detecting and removing a rootkit is also not an easy task, especially for the latest ones.

If you let us know the EXACT error you are getting then we could probably sort that out first.

Hi, thanx for the help so far. I tried to run spybot, but it will not run for me! Eventually found a program in a magazine, called superantispyware. Run this and it found something called, Rootkit.Agent/Gen-UACFake. This would not delete for me!!

Well that's me shut up now!

My suggestion is to run VIPRE Rescue (http://live.sunbeltsoftware.com/) and see if that cleans it.

Did it find more than just the one problem? Which program did you use first? Which one found the most?

Just curious.
