I keep getting strange emails from myself!!! The contents are about a chinese electrical firm. The headings are Postmaster@mail.hot when I click on these messages it says delivery status notification failure. or Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.
The firm is called more happy 2009@hotmail.com or Bettermore.net
Some of these emails say they are from vacation reply. i have looked there and there is nothing.
I get these emails each night and they are increasing.
How can I get rid of this once and for all?

Hi Fran

I'd say you cant go wrong with loading the following software on your machine then run the scans and get rid of whatever it finds.

Malwarebytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org/ - download "free version"

Spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

and either Avast home edition anti-virus from http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

or AVG anti-virus from http://free.avg.com/

all free programs

let us know how you get on.

I NEVER open e mails from myself unless I know I have sent them. They go straight to delete. I regularly, as in every other day delete temp internet files and run the following programmes. I use AVG and Ad-Aware free editions.

Someone who is sending spam has got a hold of your email address and is using it to send spam. That is why you are getting these returned emails returned from postmasters, which is basically saying that the email address does not exist.

Matelot79 is right - it's called 'spoofing'.

Some nefarious character is using the name of your email address to send spam to people. When it's rejected by their email server a 'non-delivery response' is sent back to the original email address, i.e., yours.

Unfortunately though, you can't make it stop.

Only thing you can do is to set up a mail filter to redirect those emails (or emails with that particular subject line, or from a particular email address) to your ''junk' folder.

It's not neessarily anything to do with malware, spyware or a virus - they could have got your email address from anywhere to be honest, but it's never a bad idea to run an anti-malware/spyware program like the ones already suggested previously.

It's the one problem you get with Out Of Office or vacation replies. If you get spam while you're away, your system send a reply saying that 'I'm away'. When the spammers get this reply from you they say 'ah, that address is live - add it to our mailing list' which means you will just get more and more spam.

There is really only two realistic ways of keeping your inbox clean unfortunately:

1. Get some GOOD antispam software
2. Don't use email

If you use email then at some point you will get spam.
