View Full Version : View from Thurso Bay

I gazed across Thurso bay to where Orcadia lay,
The Sun rose ovet Dunnet Head and took my breath away.
There were the islands wrapped in sheets of snow,
And then like a duvet the clouds sank grey and low.
I looked and looked again as Pentland Firth turned blue.
And Thurso Bay took on a steely hue.

Now the hours have gone from morn to dusk and with a chancing pass,
Once more I peered through the window glass,
The cliffs of Hoy are flaming red and edged with gold.
The snow fields gleam like a garden rose that's pink and old.
I'm racing down the road camera in hand, all aghast,
To catch the sight that that will not last.

Out of breath through Burnside to the cliff path I race,
To catch this sight, before the night leaves not a trace.
And there another person stands her eyes are northward fixed,
We look,we smile,exchange a word,and are bewitched,
She turns and to me says "That's not a sight to see on many a day."
I answered back, " It's a Caithness's own special magical way"

This will with me remain to me as a special sight.
And when I next I watch the Orcadian lighthouse light,
It will bring back to me, all that that is true,
About the special light and hue.
That makes the county such a place to be,
A delight,with ever changing sceenery.

What a lovely poem, Lizz! :o) It brings back memories of a view I'm all too familiar with, but haven't seen for years!

Beautifully written and worth keeping (hope you don't mind if I copy it!). I'm one of those lucky people that can see Orkney and Dunnet Head under a huge sky any time I like on a clear day - so, so lucky.
Haste ye back :o)
