Just used a picture for mine that it accepted as small enough for it. My avatar is a pic from my faviourite japanese anime series ever made, Sailor moon. I learnt some japanese while watching all five series with english subtitles. couldn't say the words but i knew what they meant when it was said without the subtitles.

There are loads of sites out there where you can get a knew Avatar and here is a link to one such site that gives you free Animated Avatar's :-

Personally I think the very best Idea is to make one up yourself and that way it will be unique, all you need is a good Program such as Photoshop or Paint.

Couple of good image manipulation programs here:

Paint.net

and GNU Image Manipulation Program (or GIMP for short)
http://www.gimp.org/

Both free and both have loads of plugins available.

I got mine from a personal photo of me taken during WW2 when I was a young US Marine veteran.

Alice: You have me in a quandery. I am old at 84 years and the photo is of a young US Marine; however, that's the way I looked back then.

Now, if I were to change to a photo of the way I now look.... Well, perhaps I may change photos anyway.
