how long ago was it that the council decided to have a walk around the town, take note of the eyesores and take some action? I think everyone was so pleased that at last something was being done. What has been done since? the remains of what was once the Pavilion cinema was painted a viral shade of blue. Another building belonging to the same family had some slight cosmetic work done to the surface. Otherwise - zilch. Now with woolies shut and the home aid shop moved out - the town looks more dilapidated than ever. the only redeeming feature is the floral displays which I believe is funded by the shop keepers and the floral basket committee.
Well done to them.

Well what a statement I dont agree that the whole of Wick is an eysore.
There has been and still is a lot of work taking place to improve the town. :)

Yes there are some areas which are in need of attention but on the whole its not that bad.

Theres a lovely caravan site beautiful walks up the river. If you walk around the harbour area you will see the new houses where there was run down properties.

Bignold park is a nice open space for the kids to play.

It must be disheartening for people involved in regeneration in the town to log on and read such a wide sweeping statement as the whole of Wick being an eyesore.

There are a few buildings in prominent places which need urgent attention and the council should work in co-operation with the owners to come to a solution on this as a matter of priority.

Just having a wee joke Alice. I agree, there's some lovely spots in Wick. It's a shame that it seems to turning into a ghost town (from what Iv'e been told)

I would gladly brighten the place up by painting pictures on all the buildings like they have in invergordon - but somehow I think I would be fined and charged for cleaning it up!
Maybe I could get the girl who painted the train to help me........

Perhaps but we are in the grasp of financial meltdown, Tesco wasn't to blame for Woolies.

The whole of Wick is an eyesore.

I do not live in Wick so feel I can offer an opinion on this comment. I think it is grossly unfair and totally untrue and I am very sorry for this poor individuals blinkered view. As with most town there are many aspects of it which need tidying up but there is much in Wick to be proud of and much that is good. The town is not an eyesore though there may be eyesores in the town.

They were well on the slippery road before Tescos opened their doors. Inverness was too handy for shoppers to jump in the car and get a wider choice. :)

At least with Tescos and the retail park in Wick there is no need to nip to Inverness quite the same as before as there is a much wider selection on offer now, not perfect but an improvement on price and dare I say in some cases quality.

i really do like the idea of murals! we could get some budding artists.. school kids ect.. to come up with designs and have contests. then have them approved and painted on the sides of certain buildings.
it would brighten up the town no end!
what do you guys think? and would it work? would the council agree to it?
how would we fundraise to buy the paints?
who would be on the committe?
i would help in any way i could *G*
being serious here by the way! who else would be interested?
and how would we go about putting it fowards the council?
any ideas?
any advice bill?

There are lot worse places about than Wick and I have lived in a few of them:eek:.

As with many towns there are going to be areas that will attract the could do better tag, but for the most part it is a tidy town with a few "work in progress tags".

Comments I have had from two seperate visitors that it is grey and not very coloufull and they felt that if more people painted there house a different colour might help.:confused

Where i am from Gourock it is just the same we no longer have a real high street it is just bioutiques etc. even the blockbuster film rental place has gone. I think all small t omedium towns are suffering the same fait with the global down turn and the big out of town developments. Things do tend to improve after a while we have signs of a pickup and a few shops moving in all be it more specialist shoips but things are slowly improving as an outsider i still must add that i think Wick is a beautifull wee town and love visiting the inlaws and one day hope to be a proud resident.

Maybe compulsory buying orders would help?
Then the council could rent the premises back out? But then again the old Azad shop is up for rent with no takers as is woolies etc etc.
Maybe subsidise business' that move into the area? After all isnt that what HIE are all about,or did Pat Grant get everything that theirs nothing left!!!!![lol]

that's a good idea - but not one the council will take up on I fear. woolies would make a brilliant indoors arcade. It could be council run, renting space as opposed to the whole shop. Reducing the rates of street shops might also attract businesses. i don't mind it being all cafes or restaurants or even charity shops as long as it is not empty depressing buildings with pain peeling off.

Wick needs rid of some of its eyesores.
There will still be a good portion of the town left at the end of
such clearances.
Un-pretty towns need all the help they can get.
I may never visit again, but I'm so glad I went thrice.

p.s. I've noticed my message count is approaching 3,000 ! A preposterous tally, even over several years....especially when I consider most of posts are not just of the one or two line type.

I'm determined not to breach the 3,000 barrier - not under this nickname anyway. Percy has had his day. As Landmarker had his - he asks me to give you his regards.

I'm taking a break. Adversaries and allies alike fare thee well (99% of you anway)
Time for pastures new and other things. I do not invite further comment but equally did not want ponderance of my fate as my absence was mooted.

Have a good summer.

We havent been up since September and even then it was a flying visit just to pick our Scorrie up but the place has a neglected look about it.

Empty shops and flaking paint work are the main cause of this impression as the people are friendly and welcoming.

Gourock does have that "neglected" look about it but is improving its appearance by the community taking ownership of the problem. It does have the advantage of a more central location in Scotland, whereas Wick sometimes feels like the edge of civilisation....almost forgotton.:(

Wick was once a thriving fishing port so maybe with the promise of the new harbour it'll bring some life back into the area.:D

I see that big cracks are appearing now in the old doctor's Leask's Surgery/Norseman's ex staff lodgings building in High st .
Most of yesterday structural engineers and building workers were looking over the building as it now seems ready to fall in bits ,so maybe now classsed as a dangerous building ,but is a listed building i hear .
Be Better to flatten and put eldery folk's house's there now
