I have 2 laptops infected with a virus. We are able to switch the laptops on and thats it, it won't open any files etc and i am unable to download any anti-virus sofware to fix this problem. Laptops won't close down we are having to let the battery die out.

Need help from a pc expert please.

Well, I assume you must have access to the internet somehow to post this message on here. So you should be able to download this program http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php.

If you are on a diffferent computer that is not virus infected, put this program onto a usb flash drive and put it into one of the infected computers.

When turning on the infected computer, tap F8 unti a list appears on the screen, You should be able to choose to start the computer in safe mode. Do that and see if you are able to install malwarebytes anti malware from the flash drive. Then run a scan.

And then, when you put the flash drive back in a clean computer that may well be infected as well! Virus transfer via USB drive is a favourite method these days and is why many organisations ban their use.

Instead, burn a CD with everything you want to use and make sure it is "closed" or "finalised".

If the machine won't switch off normally:
Try holding down the power button for about 10 seconds or so
or if that fails
Unclip the battery. Wait 30 seconds then re-insert.

I'd go along with Jim - don't use a USB as it it will just spread the infection (okay some malware doesn't spread this way but the chances are yours will and you don't want to take the chance of infecting something else however small it might be).

Just a quick note - switching them off. You shouldn't have to let the batteries die out (in fact I wouldn't recommend the battery is left in the laptop while it's connected to the mains at all but that's another story). If you hold the power button down for say 5 -10 seconds, the laptop should switch off.

If what Jim suggests doesn't work I'd suggest getting professional help with this. If the problems are as sever as you describe, you might be at the stage of needing more than a scanner to clean it up. Give it a try though ad seen how far you get.

I did download Malware and transfer it through a usb stick. Ran a detailed scan on one infected laptop and it found a virus and sent it to Quarantine. No idea what happens from there. Laptop won't connect to the home-hub which i know is not a problem with the hub as i'm here on-line now :D
I'm going to get someone to take it from there and thank you guys for replying to me.
Much Appreciated.

What do you mean by this Blueivy?
Should the battery not be in the laptop when you are running it with the power adapter.

It's not that it shouldn't be in because it is dangerous. It's really that it shouldn't be in because it's simply bad for your battery.

The problem with laptops is that they are incredibly cheap compared to what they were. Technology has moved on and we can do amazing things that we couldn't before. However the battery, in lower end laptops, is still 'dumb' in most cases.

When you plug the laptop in, with the battery in, the battery is constantly charging and discharging and then charging and discharging .... etc. As it's doing this is degrades the life of the battery. All you're doing is killing the battery.

I take the battery out of my laptop as I use it mainly on the mains. So my laptop battery is charged up, put in the bag and when I need it it's got some power in there (depending on when it was last charged). Every so often I put it back into the laptop and charge it. Because of this I know my battery will last me a good few years (which is all they are really good for).

I found this (http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/usingyourlaptop/f/laptopbattery.htm) which may explain it a little more. However my advice is to take the battery out and put it away if you don't need it. That way it will last.
