Living outside the beeg places wi shops, life had its own rythms.

"Thomson's" (?) grocery van from Castletown (2/week).
Christy Mackay's butcher's van from Keiss (2/week).
These two were as reliable as sunrise, and a delight to hear the toot.
There was also a fish van from Wick on Fridays, but its regularity varied with availablity of catch.

And freshly filled milk bottles daily, cooled by the rain.

For young townies, there were the baker's vans that came to Thurso High at morning (and afternoon ?) break time(s).

I guess everybody is now "expected" to have a car and drive to some big bland killer of vans -- aka a scourge to the wee shoppies who used to be there when we did make it to town.

Sorry; I'm just reminiscing !

PS: vans must have been quite environmentally friendly

Here is a link to a thread about quite a few of the old mobile shops.
