Winter

We sat indoors enjoying of the fire in the grate,

We throw a log into the flame and sit and simply wait.

And by and by it springs to life and warms our hands and feet,

The dogs lie soaking up the glow, enjoying all the heat.

Man and dog together, content, in tune with life,

The man thinks now as time’s gone on he’d better stir his wife.

He tells me what we’ve done today and what is still to do,

Our goats will need their evening feed and water filled, too true.

Our Kate jumps up to see to them, she’s never let them down,

And they can all rely on her, they know when she’s around.

She pulls on boots and sets out forth but then she hurries back,

To tell us of what’s happened, all around us in a crack.

We knew it had been bitter, with winter biting hard,

She passed this way and left us, deep with snow out in the yard

In the quiet and the solitude, and under guise of night,

She visits us again and covers all in crystal white.

The chill has been apparent, the icy wind alone,

Among us all throughout the day has cut right to the bone.

A flake or two did pass us I remember there today,

I didn’t pay much heed or even stop to think and say,

We’ve not got through the winter, there’s still some snow just yet,

And now the Ice queen visits us, like calling in a debt.

Once again immobilised, a foot of snow or more,

Fills the yard like Christmas card and drifts across the door.

No matter for our goats are fed, the snow can carry on,

They’ve warm water with molasses, we’ll survive ‘till winters gone.
