Just under 10 weeks since his previous owner took him to the vet to be put to sleep because he didn't want to pay for the leg operation, Smokey got his first run off the lead last night. Hankies all round!

A very big thank you to NESSR (Northern English Springer Spaniel Rescue) for trusting us with him.

It would have been a crime to end that beautiful dog's life. Smokey looks so energetic, healthy and happy. Kudos to the vet, the rescue org and to you, Minx, for giving him the kind of life he deserves.

He`s gorgeous. What joy you will have together over the coming years. Rescue dogs are wonderful companions........I had two many years ago and both brought great joy.

What leg op did he have?
We lost our old springer under the pre op meds when he was going to have an op as he tore his cruciate ligaments on his front left leg...
We were warned that he was more likely to get arthritis/stiffness in that leg afterwards...

He snapped his cruciate ligament in his left hind leg, but when the vet up here read his notes, she said the way that it's been mended means that he's very unlikely to get arthritis in the joint - he had something called a TPLO, where they actually saw part of the joint off to reform it at a different angle. There's a good description here:

He's lovely and I'm sure he's really glad you're looking after him!

I'd never consider putting my boys down if they needed surgery.

Well done you :D

Thats what we hoped to have done to Benson but at his age it would have been too risky he was going to get his ligaments"swapped" over on his knee.
It was too big an op!
And very expensive so I can understand Smokeys previous owners not having the money needed.
He wouldnt have had a decent chance at a normal life without the op though.
But he obviously deserved a second chance at a good life.

Unfortunately they did have the money, the vet reported that they'd decided he 'wasn't economic to repair'. [mad] The bill to the rescue society for the operation and castration was under £500, though I think that was a special charity rate, as my friend's Akita (OK, a much larger breed) has just had the op in London and it cost £2,500.
