Well if the budget was "fairly" generous, I'd choose either of these two for starters!! (though I have a bias towards Canon already)

I have just got a Nikon D60 and it's a wonderful camera!! I love it! I would love to go better but this was enough money as it was!!

If you buy it online with Jessops you get a much better lense for the same price as buying it else were and also get a 8gb memory card free too.

It's my new toy :D
