I was wondering - are there any good dog rehoming centres up here? I'm looking to adopt an older dog as a companion for my greyhound, but I'm not sure if there'll be very many dogs available round here. Will I have to wait for weeks or months before finding the right dog? Or will I have to travel miles and miles to find a new little friend for Corby?

You could visit Balmore run by the SSPCA who might have a friend for your leggy one. Here are two links for you to try........Good luck in your search. You could also try the local vets to see if they know of a dog in need of a loving home. www.Scottishspca.org.uk/rehoming...ess- sutherland (http://www.Scottishspca.org.uk/rehoming...ess- sutherland) or www.oldies.org.uk (http://forum.caithness.org/www.oldies.org.uk)

Also Carolyne Poulton at www.lrrcs.org (http://www.lrrcs.org) for labrador (& others!) rescue, and have a look at www.oldies.org.uk (http://www.oldies.org.uk) for older dogs, you could have a look at the notice board in Pets at Home.

It's at http://www.spanielrescuescotland.org/

Good luck with your search. Also, I think they often have lurchers at Balmore to accompany said leggy one, or what about another greyhound rescue?

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions on where to get a new friend for Corby.
I tried Balmore first, as they are the closest, but sadly they don't have any older dogs at the moment.
However on the SSPCA website I saw a 10-12 year old dog called Milo at the rehoming centre in Inverness. Took a drive down there yesterday with Corby, introduced the two dogs to each other and ended up bringing Milo home with us. He's a lovely old boy, but nobody's told him he's old - he acts like a big kid all the time! [lol]
I think he's going to be a great addition to the family.
Thank you again to all for your recommendations.

aww lovely happy ending for Milo, he looks such a gentle old man. Well done you for rehoming him and I hope he has many happy years with you and helps you get over the huge gap that Heath must have left in your lives.

Look forward to seeing more pics of Milo

I'm so glad you decided to rehome an older dog as they are so often over looked.
Milo looks at home in your pics and doesnt look his age.
When we lost our old collie to cancer last year I too had thought of an older dog but as things worked out I found Scorrie on the pet forum here who was needing rehomed.
He was only 6 months old at the time but we were going to be his 3rd home.First few months were difficult but we havent looked back since.

Just curious here, but does an older dog adjust any easier?

If Milo is anything to go by, they adjust immediately - he acts like he's always lived here! When we got home yesterday, he spent a couple of hours of running round the house sniffing everything out, and then he settled down and snoozed for the rest of the evening. He's seemed completely settled in ever since.

Today, he had a great time exploring his new place for walkies - the field across from my house, and he's already getting used to which gate is ours when we come home.

Whenever we go into the kitchen, Milo is there watching every move we make and I think if he had his way he'd munch his way through every scrap of food in the house.

He's very affectionate and as soon as we start scratching his back or rubbing his tummy, we find we practically have a job for life!

Corby is gradually warming to him too. She still gets a bit irritated with him when he gets too excitable, but other than that she tolerates him very well and when we were out today, she actually tried to play with him - although Milo didn't want to know then because he was too busy sniffing and exploring the field.

I think, in time, Corby and Milo will be a double act that us poor humans will find difficult to resist.

Sounds like you have a lovely dog in Scorrie. It must be so rewarding to have persevered through the initial trouble with him and come out the other side with such a wonderful companion.

I have teenybash to thank for helping us adjust to a wacky "beardie, boarder collie cross" he was and still is a handfull but such a joy to have.
The "bog" diving is something I wish he wouldnt do but as soon as you say out,out he goes.Sometimes you catch him mid jump and the wee expression on his face is priceless as he know the only way is down.

I'm glad Milo has adjusted so well and your other dog is friendly towards him.Our other collie ignored Scorrie for two weeks.
Think she was secretly hoping he was one of our "holiday" stays.
