Following on from DrSzin's poll on Browsers, I'm interested to find out what resolution our visitors use.

Your screen resolution is how many pixels (dots) are displayed on your screen at once. i.e. horizontal pixels x vertical pixels.

Windows users can find the information here:

right-click on an empty part of your desktop (a small menu appears),
left-click on "Properties" (bottom of menu - "Display Settings" window opens)
then left-click on the "Settings" tab (top right)You can also find the display settings in your control panel.

If your resolution is not listed, please select the closest width (first number) to the setting you have.

Both of my work desktop screens are 1280 x 1024, as is my home desktop. All are flat-screen. My laptop is 1400 x 1050 - I think.

None of these appear in the poll options at present, so I went for the closest.

I'm running at 1280 x 1024, which is the resolution my screen is optimised for.

What are the advantages of having a larger resolution? I only see disadvantages, the print looks smaller and it slows the computer down terribly.

I'm on 1024x768 btw

Smaller 'print' means more can fit on yer screen. An advantage imo.

It would seem that this means logging out and checking the setting and starting again. I hope that I am right. So I need to remember Properties, Setting, Properties, Settings. I'll get back to you with the answer.

Can I ask those of you who are not using a standard 4:3 ratio in your resolution, is my avatar a square or a rectangle?

Thats for folks with 1280x1024 or similar.

Also are there a few out there using widescreen monitors?

And to the few on 800x600, would you be willing to increase to 1024x768?

Rheghead, resolution and text size are only linked at the most basic level, you can have a very high resolution and then increase the text size to get the best of both worlds, icons and images will be smaller but text could be the same size.

Thats for folks with 1280x1024 or similar. It looks like a perfect square to me. I'm using 1280 x 1024.

Not only is text the same size, but it's crisper.

I very rarely use 1024x768 these days - the screen is just "too small". 1280 x 1024 is 67% bigger than 1024x768, so the latter seems cramped.

I tell lies.....
I had changed my resolution but forgot!
I have now set it at 1280 x 1084 and it is definitely square!

I just had a look at 1280x1024, wow, its a rectangle for me and all everything looks a bit squashed.

I just had a look at 1280x1024, wow, its a rectangle for me and all everything looks a bit squashed.Well, I've just measured it on my screen, and it is indeed a square. I've also checked that I'm running at 1280 x 1024.

whats the dimensions of your screen, if it's a laptop is it perhaps not 4:3 like basic CRTs.

Your avatar is nice and square on 1680x1050...20" LCD

whats the dimensions of your screen, if it's a laptop is it perhaps not 4:3 like basic CRTs.It's a 17" Dell 1702 Flat Panel Color Monitor - two and a half years old, not too fancy. I've measured its aspect ratio to be 1.26 +/- 0.01 -- which just happens to be equal to 1280/1024 = 1.25.

Problem solved. :D

Well its beginning to look like I can ditch the old "build it for 800x600" idea and move on to "build it for 1024x768" :) (finally)

Hi Niall, your avatar is square on my 1280 x 1024, however Dr Szin's avatar measures rectangular.

Hi Niall, your avatar is square on my 1280 x 1024, however Dr Szin's avatar measures rectangular. That's because it is rectangular, it's 80 x 60.

LCDs in standard format are 5:4, so a resolution of 1280x1024 results in the same appearance that 1280x960 produces on a 4:3 display, (most CRT monitors).

if I use 1024x768 I lose my taskbar?? why?

Niall Fernie
28-Feb-06, 10:01
unicorn you probably need to adjust the display settings on your monitor to bring it back into view.

Boozeburglar, suddenly everything is clearer, although nothing persuades me to get a LCD screen yet.

Agreed.

LCDs are nice if you have space restrictions, and for large scale operations energy consumption is an issue too, but for colour critical work, speed and flexibility you still cannot beat a good crt.

Saying that I think most of us will end up using LCDs until the next technology rolls out.

well it does seem that anyone buying a complete pc system these days gets one automatically.

Gamers and other fast-graphics users often prefer CRT, but almost everyone I know prefers TFT LCD for general use. I wouldn't go back to CRT because I can't stand flicker and I love the extra space a flat-panel monitor gives.

I'm just about to buy a new TV but I can't decide between CRT and flat-panel. Advice or opinions anyone?
