The last few days has seen some good surf, and I think quite a few of us have been out there taking photographs.
Yesterday afternoon I finally managed to be in the right place, at the right time and with the right combination of camera and lens!

Great shots! The surf has been amazing, the surfers must have great jungle drums as it only takes a couple of hours when there are great waves and they seem to appear in their droves...

I watched from the little cafe at the front, really enjoyed the views this week.

Thank you all for your comments, I managed to get out yesterday afternoon for a while, different choice of viewpoint, down on the flagstone, only problem here was that my all weather shoes and wet, with a touch of green, Caithness Flagstone make ice look grippy! So not as close as I would have wished.

Really like all three of those - great waves!!! I hope you don't mind but I notice someone on flickr mentioned croppin the sky in no3 and I agree - feel it would focus more on the foreground surfer and add to the pic! :)

My best attempt from Wednesday:

Not great, but the lens fund has reached the point where I can start looking for a second hand 100-400mm now, so hopefully they'll get better over the next couple of months!

cazmanian_minx,
That looks pretty good to me.
In terms of focal length I could also with a longer lens, only using a 70-200 with a 1.4x converter. Oh for a 400mm f2.8 !!!

wifie,
I never mind constructive criticism, it's always helpful, mind you being a stubborn old male I might not take any notice of it! :D

It looks alright at that size, but it's a bit fuzzy if you view it any bigger [lol]

I think I need to win the lottery before I can think about a 400mm f2.8! (And take up weight-lifting!!)

CM - I like yer shot - like how the curve of the spray echoes the curve of the wave - cool angle!

NL - [lol] :Razz

You only need to go for bigger lens if you what more detail Minx, then you will lose the drama of the shot ie the long rolling waves.
I took this pic the other day it will blow up a little more but there is no point because you lose more of the action.
Late evening overcast sky
400mm 5.6 iso 800 1/640.

Much prefer your second set NL. Great images. The lens is never long enough for these sort of shoots.

I came to the conclusion that it would be far more financially (and end image) effective to buy a good wet suit and a water proof camera houseing and just get in the water, MUCH closer to the actual action, than spend +£6/7000 on a huge fast lens. All the really stunning surfing shots seem to be taken "in the barrel" with this sort of set-up.

Now am I really that serious about getting very cold and very wet for my art!!?

Wow Deemac - would love to see any shots you got like that!
