'Fraid not, I stick to the usual. Can't do horror, anything too gory or bloody I am afraid. My faves are 7even, Kiss the Girls, Along came a Spider.

New ish ones that I want to see but have not yet are The Reader, Slum dog, In Bruge, 21 (which is a true ish story about students counting cards in Las Vegas), Untraceable and that is the ones that I can think of just now, I actually have a list but I can't find it!!

A colleague has In Bruges and 21 on dvd, both of which are currently doing the rounds with others. I'm 6th on the list to get them so expect it will be about another week before it's my turn. They both look like good films.

Bad timing here but the last movie I watched was em.... Kung Fu Panda, it was actually very funny, if only I hadn't fallen asleep an hour into it.

I really want to see Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button.

This weekend we will be watching that bunch from Royston Vasey 'The League of Gentlemen - Apocalypse', hope it's good ;)

I actually went to see it in Inverness cinema but i was heavily pregnant at the time and was walkin around the streets the whole day, so i fell asleep! So when it came out on dvd i watched the whole thing. It was brilliant! :Razz

Went to see this a couple of weeks ago in Dundee.
It's long at just under three hours but the time goes quickly.
First off - it's a fairy tale so prepare to suspend your belief in anything real. A little like 'The Green Mile' in the way it fantasises about age, mortality and existence.

That said, it's a cracking story. Warm human emotions are embroidered into a fable of a baby born geriatric who grows into er...a baby again !
I'll say little more apart from the effects and make up are so brilliantly done you'll be asking yerselves 'how did they do that?'

I now really rate Brad Pitt as an actor too (I saw Kalifornia only recently)whereas before hand I just thought he was top totty for the ladies. My wife thinks he's great and I have to admit he lends a certain something to nineteen forties Indian motorcycle - that short scene of him riding one as a younger man was as cool as 'owt! The bike outshone him though - I'm not on the turn - even I'd look cool on one o'those !

Cate Blanchett is just right for her part and as she ages the love of her life gets younger. Happilt they are able to meet in the middle....great scenes in the Florida Keys.

Although the film was very good, I did prefer Slumdog Millionaire - the only other movie I've seen recently at the cinema. Were it a choice between the two I'd got for Boyle's Oscar winner.

Now I differ with you on that, Percy. Although I thought "Slumdog Millionaire" was very good, I preferred "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". It was such an unusual story, and Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were absolutely brilliant. I agree that Cate was just right for her part. She never ceases to amaze me - I think she's one of the best actresses of our time. Like you, I kept asking myself "How did they do that?" It was a really clever and touching film - remarkable, in fact. It had me spellbound from beginning to end!

Benjamin Button - 8.5

Blimey! this was a strange one.
Set in affluent U.S. suburbia - California methinks - cos it's often sunny.

Kate Winslet ( convincing as a Yank) plays a young-ish Mother - bored with her child and her life...her husband...rich and successful is an avid follower of online porn. She despises the other mums in her peer group...materialistic and frankly - stupid.

There is a spoken narrative, which is often disconcerting but works well here. Delivered dispassionately by an immaculately sounding west coast American...who injects doses of black humour. In fact I'm left wondering if this film is a hybrid. A black comedy and social commentary which delves human frailty and fickledom (?) There are a couple or three laugh out loud moments due to his deadpan delivery of inescapable, but quirky truths.

The neighborhood resembles the American Dream. That is until a 'paedophile' moves in. He's actually 'just' a flasher but the reaction of the townsfolk is classic and understandable....if a touch over the top.

Actually the actor they chose for this part is just about the creepiest looking fellow I've ever seen playing a human being. Perfect for the role of....pervert. We actually see him in swimming trunks , snorkelling in the local pool - whch is packed - and I felty decidedly queasy. For he's positively reptillian. Imagine E.T. disguised as a bloke!

I'll say little more. The plot revolves around an attraction between two bored , disatisfied spouses. It's an 18 cert (I think) ...and there are some rumbustious sex scenes, nudity and some examples of male behaviour at the outer edges of acceptability - in fact two of 'em were gross. One scene in particular with the reptillian man quite shocked even me! No way to behave on a first date. An almost overwhelmingly sad experience for anyone with a heart, morals and empathy. A boorish man would laugh no doubt - thankfully I'm not boorish.

The story unfolds quite exquisitely and culminates in a tense finale, where vulnerability - and folly - are exposed as one of the characters you care most about is placed in harms way. Clue in the title.

All in all this was a very good film but will not appeal to everyone.

I rate it an eight - which is very high for me.

Anne I also love animated and feel good films. Loved Mamma Mia!

I like a wide range of films and choose what I watch according to my mood ie if I need cheering up (most of the time!:()then I like to watch a nice easy going film.

I love films with special effects and two which I really enjoyed lately are 'The Spiderwyck Chronicles' and 'Golden Compass'.

Afraid I didn't like Kung Fu Panda although the animation was great.

The Host is pretty good, as long as you don't mind subtitles. Most the the Studi Ghibli films are excellent (the same people who did Spirited away) Hellboy 2, much better than the first one!
Slither is another odd but funny film. 28 days later is brilliant.
I am sure I will think of more!

I have been watching a lot of movies lately and can heartily recommend the following for a good way to waste an hour and a half or so ..

Zulu, Taken, Brokeback Mountain, Shawshank Redemption, The Departed, Casino Royale, The Bourne Trilogy, Iron Man, Batman Returns, The Dark Knight, No Country for Old Men, There Will be Blood, Wall-e, Zodiac, Donnie Darko, Unforgiven, 300, Blade Runner.

Zodiac in particular stands out as it follows a real life case of a serial killer, Jake Gyllenhall puts in a stunner of a performance. Its a bit long but it is one of those movies that just grabs you.

Wall-e was also brilliant, I have it on Blu Ray and the picture quality is out of this world. And as I work with a woman called Eve it gave me the excuse to call her up and go "EEEvvvvaaaaaaaa" down the phone. That just doesnt get boring ..

But I would avoid the new Indian Jones film .. its rubbish.

percy toboggan
05-Mar-09, 18:22
Mmmm...I have Zodiac. It contains on eof the most unpleasant murder scenes I've ever seen. Accurate I'd imagine - as it should be. Murder is not nice....nor should it be dressed up or sanitised. I understand people don't usually die easily when attacked. <shudder> ...I'm a fan of David Kronenbourg...another director who also shows the consequences of violence and does not gloss over it's effects. (History of Violence:Eastern Promises)

Zodiac a wordy, worthy film with no real conclusion - I think this is why it's not as popular as it might be. Well worth a look. Thanks for reminding me I have it - I'd almost forgotten.

I must differ with you on that one, GH. My husband, sons and myself all loved "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"! We enjoyed it every bit as much as the previous Indiana Jones movies. I have to admit I was a bit sceptical before it came out. I wasn't sure if the aging Harrison Ford could pull the role off as well as he did in his younger days. But by gum, he did! I have nothing but respect for the man. Here he is in his mid sixties, yet he performed many of his own stunts! Karen Allen, who was his former side kick in "Raiders of the Lost Ark", was also amazing, and she's in her mid fifties.

The storyline was great, with all the thrills and excitement of the first three films. Cate Blanchett was superb as the villainous Soviet agent Irina Spalko. We enjoyed the movie so much at the cinema, that we later bought it on DVD.

I have seen 2 versions of Zodiac, i have the version with Jake Gyllenhaal as leading role. But i do rember watching another version, i think it might have been Zodiac Killer but im not sure, plodding through imdb right now to see if i can find it.

But the version with Jake Gyllenhaal is very well put together i thought. I did however have to watch it a couple of times to pick up on all the details because there was so many.

The Postman 6/10. Kevin costner in a Post-apocalyptic America who as a scam pretends to be a postman to get food. He takes on a young boy who starts to spread the news and the postal service resumes. Its a good film the didnt do well with the critics, I found it entertaining though a bit sickly sweet in places but over all a good film.

I then went on to watch Dances with Wolves which is still one of his best and my fav films.

I've watched Evolution tons of times and still laugh really hard every time!! There are so many funny bits in it I can't pick my favourite!! ;) Most recent film I saw at the cinema was Bolt - good kids film, would recommend it, especially if you're a dog lover. Saw Madagascar 2 in cinema before that and loved it!! Also Wall-E - brilliant film, kids totally loved it. Evolution .. must see if I can get a copy of that and watch it again as it is well funny !!, picking up some good pointers for future viewing on this thread.

I watched a favourite film of mine earlier today called "Vertical Limit", all about a failed expedition on K2. Brilliant cinematography and some good one liners in it.

"Whats up with her ??"

"Oh she's French Canadian, sometimes she is French and sometimes she is Canadian .. today she's French"

And while I remember, and its not really a film but the series "Planet Earth" is my favourite viewing just now. I have it on Blu Ray and it looks amazing. Hard to believe that in a few years some of the species in it will only be able to be seen on screen.

I have just finished watching 'Number 23' starring Jim Carrey. I was not sure about the movie when i saw the trailers, but goodness it was gripping.

From the way the story un-folds its very well thought out and put together. A few bits in the movie that maybe could have been played better but no major complaints.

I am not a huge fan of Jim Carrey but he has the personality that is able to hold a role like this.

It was weird how they figured out how everything came to the number 23, a great deal of thinking must of gone into this.

It completely had me paranoid the whole way through about the 'number 23'. If nobody has seen this then please watch it, well worth a look.

I give it an 8/10. Would have made a 9 but i felt a couple of scenes were not necessary and instead could have included some different links to the story.

Burn After Reading has Brad Pitt at his best. This movie is the Cohn Brothers follow-up to No Country for Old Men but there is no resemblance in plot. It is a comedy set in Washington among the Intelligence (?) community there.

Either you will love it or promptly post a denunciation in the worst movies of all time thread.

I loved it, thousands have hated it to judge by its prompt appearance in Blockbuster outlets, followed by it's even prompter disappearance.

You have been warned. (But Brad Pitt as the sleazy manager of a downtown gymn is perfect casting.)

[quote=rich;517711]Burn After Reading ....

Whenever I read this film title I'm minded of that RP announcer ...Reading! This is Reading! so prevalent in the nineteen eighties - her home counties accent piercing the rafters of the old GWR station....

I also imagine countless periodicals, books and newspapers put to the torch as the clattering rolling stock gathers momentum westbound for Swindon.

Burn after Reading indeed.
I might well look out for it once the price is sensible.
Belt tightening the order of the day around here I'm afraid.

Here's a few of my recommendations - been watching quite a lot of films lately with the free dvd rental from tesco at the moment! Dan In Real Life was excellent in my opinion, starring Steve Carell(who I didn't recognise) and Juliette Binoche(seen here before in Chocolat). It's about a man who meets a woman and they're instantly attracted only to find out later she's dating his brother, and they're all staying with his parents for the holidays!! It's very romantic and has a nice ending, but isn't as predictable as some films.

Another that I liked was The Perfect Catch, starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon(didn't know him). Jimmy's character is obssessed with baseball and although he and Drew fall madly in love there's this one thing blocking their relationship - baseball. Really funny and romantic. Drew is a brilliant actress, I could watch her all day!

Catherine Zeta Jones amazed me in No Reservations. She played quite a serious role as a top chef and seemed to have a touch of OCD. Quite a deep story and she played her role really well along side co-star Aaron Eckhart(cute guy!;)). Very moving film and would particularly appeal to parents as there's a child involved in the plot. But all turns out very happily in the end - I hate sad endings (don't get me started on Titanic, Message in a Bottle, etc, etc...)

So there's a few recommendations from me - let me know whether you agree/disagree.....

Taken

Liam Neeson, 2008, Action Thriller

The seventeen year-old Kim is the pride and joy of her father, the retired agent Bryan Mills (Neeson) that left the secret service to stay near Kim in California. Kim lives with her mother and wealthy stepfather Stuart; she convinces the reluctant Bryan to sign an authorization to travel to Paris with her friend Amanda. When they arrive, they share a cab with the stranger Peter and Amanda tells to him that they are alone in Paris. When Bryan succeeds in contacting his daughter, she tells that criminals have just broke into the apartment where they are staying, they are kidnapped by an Albanese gang of human traffickers. Bryan promises in the phone to kill the kidnapper of his daughter and immediately travels to Paris to find Kim and chase the criminals.

Quote from the movie, 'I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you'

I'd rate this movie 3/5

Took the daughter and her cousin to see Beverley Hills Chihuahua today. The kids loved it and I must admit that it was quite funny but there was also the underlying message to the adults too - don't treat dogs like babies and dress them up, think responsibly about getting a dog, it is a commitment for life and the story revolves around a dog fighting ring, needless to say the baddies never win!! Worth a look!

I would agree with that rating as the story just seems a little too rushed and implausible at the beginning. Plus that daughter of his came across as seriously annoying before she got kidnapped. I got the extended cut on Blu Ray with the extended torture scene with the electricity .. OUCH.

Rhona Mitra you say ?? .. nice. I did see it advertised but I am going to wait for the Blu Ray release.

I was reading Wikipedia the other day and apparently there is a fourth one planned that takes off from where Evolution ends. That one ends with Kate going on about how two elders are dead and the anarchy that will surely follow. Sounds promising, I Hope they make it.

Dead Space is a good thing to watch! Its CGI, (Xbox game also made of it). I did not think i would enjoy it but i did! I have it on Blu-Ray and the graphics were awsome! Blood...guts of aliens. Just magic!

Anyone into japanese movies....Akira! It has taken me 3 times to watch it to even slightly understand it. But i love that movie! I think i will have to watch it a 4th time just to understand the plot now.

Final Fantasy Movies are some of my favourites! The life stream and stigma are a bit hard to follow if you have not played the games or anything before, but awsome CGI again. Fight scenes are genius.

I am probably going to get flamed for this but I bought Ghost Rider on Blu-Ray yesterday and really enjoyed it. Everyone I know hates it but I really liked it, I just don't know why.

I feel all dirty now.

Just watched this last night (Blockbuster rental LOL), it was a slightly strange but enjoyable movie, Brad Pitt was great but certainly not a sleazy gym manager, he was up-beat and funny with a large dollop of naivety. His facial expressions when he gets in the car with Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) are hilarious.

If black comedies are your thing then this will be right up your street.

All in the name of surgery!

Colin Farrell gives a great performance as a hit man who's botched his first job, set in a beautiful city he does not appreciate.

The best movie I've seen in a while!
