A picture appeared of a 34 week old foetus developing in the womb using new scanning techniques for Reproduction and Advanced Technology in London, which allows Doctors to see in detail every aspect of the unborn child. From just 8 weeks, foetuses are seen moving their limbs and from 16 weeks can be observed making complex finger movements.

Unbelievable technology don’t you think?

The interesting point here is that according to Maggie Blott (no kidding! ), a consultant obstetrician, “Babies do not normally smile until they are around 6 weeks old. They learn to do this in response to stimuli from their mothers”, even though Anti-abortion campaigners said that in some images the foetuses where smiling. I would have thought it was quite obvious why the foetus seemed to be smiling in the scan, and that could be put down purely to flatulence etc or other internal stimuli, or do they forget to smile once they are born and have to re-learn the skill in response to the mothers stimuli?
