On the news this evening was a piece about the local garage/shop/salon....

You know how you go into one of these places and they have the radio on in the background for their staff and customers ?

Well the PRS - http://www.prs.co.uk/ - have been sending notices around to these establishments demanding that they pay for a PRS Music Licence!

Now, surely the artist is getting two bites at the cherry here as the radio stations pay royalties on every song they play. But if you listen in your workplace that is deemd a public performance!....

So guess what? You have to pay as well!!!

How did that song form Cabaret go?

A mark, a yen, a buck, or a pound
A buck or a pound
A buck or a pound
Is all that makes the world go around,
That clinking clanking sound
Can make the world go 'round.

Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money...... [disgust]

We had to stop playing the music we had for the community center as they wanted something like £800 per year. That was 5 years ago. Then when we argued that was too much they wanted too see our bookings for the year so they could establish how often it would be on eg when therewas a local market in.It got so stupid that no music is played by us.Local stall owner still plays his cd s and seems to get away with it.The law seems very kag handed to say the least.

They quote a cost of £224.44 p.a. for background music in a shop space 201 – 300 sq.m. which is only 61 pence a day folks!!!
If you just have a portable radio it's only £56.12 a year....
