My nephew was only refered to a special school because of his speach problems but when that improved they sent him back to mainstream.
He's still autistic so cant cope in mainstream,it makes me so mad.

Contact CHIP on 01463 711189.They should be able to help you get the right help for your son.

It wasn't that long ago that people on here considered the NHS a beacon of high standards, an organisation that could make you think we'd all live forever.

Thats blatant trolling.

No one was looking through rose tinted glasses, they just wern't willing to allow you to come on here ambulance chasing.

I have a friend in the Perthshire area, she is presently suffering much the same situation, only her child is in need of specialist schooling, and my friend is being repeatedly told she may be left without option other than to educate her child herself.
It's quite ridiculous to suggest a parent fills in for an education specialist but nevertheless, battle has commenced.
I think this is a countrywide problem and not just in the highlands.
When I was young (quite some time ago), there seemed to be a specialist of every description in almost every school,
Where one was not "in school" "one" could be obtained from another school.
What happened to that arrangement? when did it change? I do realise, not being a parent, that I am somewhat behind with the times.

I have read all the above with interest and intrigue. I have an appointment a week today with the speech therapist at the Thurso Health Centre in Davidsons Lane as my 4 year old can't make certain sounds and needs to be checked out to see. She was referred by nursery and I didn't have to wait that long since they spoke to me before I got the appointment.

Will let you know what I think of the service. Here's hoping she is just lazy and will come at her pronunciation in due course. She should have no problem if she takes after me, I never shut up..

My son goes to speech therapy in Thurso clinic weekly , the HV's didnt think there was much of a point but i basically demanded i be referred even if it was only for one appointment so i could get a proffesionals oppinion , it took two months for his first appointment , We deal with Carlynn (sp) she is very nice , proffesional , helpful but above all else my son gets on great with her .

She is also making a visit to his nursery so that she can give them some advice on how to help bring him on .

yes its Carlynn hughes that we see , you should like her shes very friendly and seems to be great with the kiddies .

If she does the same as she does with my son ( hes 3) she plays games with him and listens to the words he uses etc then will try to get him to do his sounds ( hard depending on his mood, but she never pushes it ) . he loves going and playing new interesting games and has even managed to pick up some "sign language" along the way to use with his words ..think its called Mackaton

his session's last 30 mins

Cool. That sounds reassuring. My little one can't pronounce her "fr's" as in front door she replaces it with a c. So you can only imagine what she says when she tells me someone is at the ? door. The OH nearly wet himself when he heard her for the first time. Wonder if the speech therapist has heard that one!!

my boy loves Fireman sam but he also can't say the "f" sound very well and pronounces it as a "W" so Fire Fire becomes Wire Wire it was cute to begin with no so much now . He has no problems with the individual sounds and because of the speech therapy he has learnt his jolly phonics well so that will help come school , his problem is when he puts certain sounds into words they don't come out right at all.

"f" is one he can't do at all but she told me she wouldn't actually see that as a problem until hes 4 at earliest as its a hard one .

We were given speech therapy when my son was being dignosed with autism but since he has been dignosed im very disapointed in the medical proffesionals. As soon as he was dignosed he was left and we were told this stupid statement that i was to give him speech therapy [evil] Since when did i qualify and gain the necessary skills needed to teach my child speech therapy[disgust]

Any way on a lighter note we are now going to be recieving speech therapy for my son through sheer determation on my part it,s terrible when you have a child with special needs and you have to fight for everything you can get and nothing is offered unless you basically pester them

Makonton is fine for some children but for someone on the autistic spectrum it can be very difficult for them to grasp so i have decided to go down a different route of non verbal communcation with no thanks to the proffesionals who promise you the moon and deliver nothing [evil] ok rant over
