There was a place in Wick referred to as the "Croie" in the 1600s, anyone know where in Wick this may have been?

Best place to find out this type of information is within the "Archives" which is Upstairs in the Public Libraray in Wick. I am sure that the Archivist there would be able to help you in this matter.

I think that would have been the Market Cross in what is now High Street

Mosser is spot on a I believe as 'Croie' is the way we would say Croix which means Cross.

That's great thanks.

It seems that some particularly bad offenders were sentenced to a couple hours in stocks at the "Croie," by the Bailies of the Council in the 1600s.

Not pleasant in February I'd imagine.......;)

think wick could do with the return of the stocks, for bad offenders, as crime is worse now.and all they get in our pc nanny state is laughable

Now there's a good use for the empty windows in Woolies.

It could be called Worthies instead.

I passed by the Court House entrance in Wick on Monday morning, and the collective standing in front of it looked like they would be the perfect mannequins.
