A dozen folk organised by Caithness Countryside Volunteers http://caithnesscountrysidevolunteers.org/ spent a few hard hours yesterday morning cleaning up the Mill Lade from the distillery to the south. It's disappointing to see how careless some people are with their waste and letter - the Lade was almost blocked in places with a shopping trolley, traffic cones, sheets of plastic, carrier bags, hundreds of crisp bags and suchlike. However it is encouraging to see so many people turn out to put this right, and make this part of Wick a place to enjoy and even to be proud of.

The 200th anniversary of Thomas Telford's Mill Lade is fast approaching, and there are plans afoot to celebrate this, as well as to develop a heritage walk along the Lade from Wick to Hemprigg's Loch. Check out this link for more details about the history of the Lade and how it might be developed: http://www.caithness.org/caithnessfieldclub/bulletins/2007/telfords_mill_lade.htm

Look out for more on these developments very soon. If you would like to become involved in this exciting project PM me and I'll put you in touch with the organisers. They will in any case soon have a brochure available for distribution about this.

Here's some of the waste we pulled out yesterday:

A job well done, but good luck with trying to get the binmen to uplift all those bags on bin day :D

CCV have already arranged for the Council to collect the waste - sooner rather than later hopefully!

I drove by yesterday proberbly about the time you took the photo and Mrs M soon worked out what you were all up too.lol

Thats a job well done and good to see that community spirit still exsists.

I am a big fan of Thomas Telford and may consider getting involved in that.

Thank you for the links daviddd.

it seems from your post that the distillery is now using the water in a new way now.when i worked in the distillery we had to close down for a week or two as it was too hot
one of the jobs to keep us employed then was to clean up the lade
that was more for weeds etc and not the rubbish its collecting now tony

Absolutely fantastic. Well done! Our only hope is that it doesn't get littered again.
