Are there any everyday phrases people use that get on your nerves?

My current peave is "At the end of the day". I hear it so often on TV, it is driving me up the wall.

At this moment in time, to be honest, there's nothing worse than making a statement without foundation, and you literally have made a fool of yourself. Basically, you shouldn't have posted it. [lol]

These posts are amazing. I'm amazed at how amazing amazed people think every single thing is these days. It's 23:47 and I'm off to bed now. Isn't that amazing?

" i'm not being funny but..." and then they say something nasty about someone else.

That's at the top of my list too! Notice how some folk latch on to one particular word and then they say it all the time.... a friend of mine keeps saying 'exactly'.... LOL

Office Phrases also irritate me e.g.

"We'll take that offline"
"Think outside the box"
"Conf call!!"
etc

21-Jan-09, 10:46
When someone says "wait a second" and it usually ends up being 10 minutes and "I'll put you on hold" annoys me no end.

One thing that really annoys me is when people say "Hardly!" after someone says something to them that they don't like or disagree with. Does my head right in

Oh, and when people say "She turned around and said....., then I turned around and said....". You aren't actually turning around!!!!

But saying that, Im really bad for saying "You know what I mean?" after everything, which probably annoys loads of people.

attielattie
21-Jan-09, 14:29
I agree with all the above - here are mine.
People saying "Aah, bless...." in a patronising tone of voice - that really makes me cringe.
Another one I hate is "I'll give you a heads up on the situation".
People (particularly fashion journalists for some reason) saying "Right now I'm loving/coveting (insert hideously pretentious item)"

Too many more to think of without my head exploding!:confused

Like in a cafe or shop when you say what you want to buy. When they say "No problem" I always want to reply, "Why should it be a problem?"

I get that a lot.

I can't stand " Awesome" and "My bad"

Also enviromental phrases like "going green" or "greening up" are getting annoying.

The first time I heard someone say (very woefully at the time, too) "Its all gone pear-shaped....", I nearly split my sides with laughter. What a ridiculous bit of jargon.

21-Jan-09, 23:58
The English people's use of the word 'yeah' interspersing a conversation and ending sentences.

Pushing the envelope. What does it mean? I don't know and don't care-it just annoys me. Why would I want to push one?

I actually find it astonishing that ANYONE could get annoyed by something so trivial as the things mentioned in this thread:confused:

The most annoying one just now is " theres a credit crunch you know" of course I know but if I want to buy something and can afford it why do I have to feel guilty?God knows I aint exactly flush so every purchase is well thought out before hand!Which brings me onto another annoying thing, sorry for going off thread but theres a certain shop in Thurso that always feels that they have to whisper the price of something I take to the counter to buy(as if I havent looked at the price of it before I buy it) and look at me as if to say "you wont be able to afford this" it drives me nuts and I wont shop there anymore because if it!Grrrr!

"Back in the day" seems to have appeared recently. :confused

"He was a good player when he was younger" seems to me to be more descriptive than "He was a good player back in the day". What day?

Its quite funny, but when people are telling me a story and they say:

So she goes " blah blah blah"

And i go "bla blah".......

I find that so annoying. I would use the word 'said'

And also, when people EXCESSIVELY use the word "like"..... and when they randomly stick it at the end of a sentence. That really gets me :p
