From 1st January this year, young people who use trains on a regular basis can benefit from an increase in the discount offered on season tickets using the Scottish Youth Railcard. The discount has been increased from one third off travel to 50% off travel and they are not subject to peak time restrictions.

Any young person wishing to take advantage of this offer can obtain a Scottish Youth Railcard for FREE if they use the voucher provided along with their National Entitlement Card which should be issued to all secondary school pupils. If this voucher is missing, the Railcard can be purchased for a small cost from all ScotRail offices.

This is a small step further for our campaign for free/ reduced price public transport but every little helps!

In response to the above mosts about the Railcard-

The Railcard can be obtained through the National Entitlement Card scheme. All young people between the ages of 11 & 25 can apply for this card across Scotland. If you are in secondary school, you will receive the card automatically after signing a form which should be provided in your school. If you no longer attend school but are still within the age range, you can pick up and application form from your local council service point. You must provide a passport size photo if applying outwith a school.

If you are aged 16-18, the card entitles you to cheaper transport on buses and trains. Currently one third off all single fares (we are trying to change this though!) As stated above, the card now entitles you to 50% off all seasonal train tickets. The card can also be used as a "proof of age" card when the PASS hologram is present on the card.

When you receive your card, you will also receive a rail voucher- take this voucher to your local ScotRail office and the voucher will be exchanged for a Scottish Youth Railcard, free of charge. This saves you £20! - this is the normal price of the railcard without the National Entitlement Card voucher. Note: you will not be able to obtain the Railcard with your National Entitlement Card alone, you must provide the voucher you were given along with the card.

You are also entitled to the card if you are a young full time volunteer.

For more information on the card for the Highland area, you can visit our website at www.hyv.org.uk or for Scotland wide information for the card for 16-18 year olds, visit www.givememycard.org. I am also happy to answer any questions anyone has.
