Still not sure. Can anyone give me some advice as to wether the Nikon d40 would be a good one for me as a beginner undertaking a photography course? Does anyone here on the org use one?

Here's a web link to Nikon D60 + 18-55 Lens at £293.61.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0013248HA/ref=pd_luc_mri?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

This is a far better camera, the D40 has been a discontinued model for about 2 years now.

This camera will be perfect for learning photography. I am training someone at the moment who uses this camera and they are progressing very well. It's not about the camera or equipment, its about you. You need something half decent but this camera is more than adequate to learn the ropes!

Good luck!

As I said, the D60 is a far better camera all round and is still current.

dblonde,

I believe that the D40 is still a current model.

Have a read of this review as well.
http://www.bythom.com/d40review.htm

The D40 has a very good reputation, is well built and exceptionally good value for money. As JB says a good model to learn on. I have used a D60 and was pleased with the results from it, it is virtually identical to the D40 but has a higher megapixel sensor, how significant this is to you really depends on the print size you are going to produce.

Beware, it is very likely that there will be a significant rise in Nikon prices soon, the pound's poor exchange rate being the cause.

Good luck

Jamie

My mistake, the D40 is still current, it's the D50 I was getting mixed up with. However the D60 is still the better buy for all sorts of reasons, not least the 10 megapixel image sensor. The D60 uses the technology that has also been applied in the Nikon D300, the EXPEED image processor.

Yes I do, and I will be running some soon, hopefully in the spring.

I am not a big time photo expert, but I have to say that my D40 has been an amazing piece of kit. If anyone wants a DSLR, I can strongly recommend this one. Mine has been all over the world, and unfailingly takes outstanding photos.

It's low light performance is just excellent, which to me is a big bonus for photographing things like Christmas lights and Guy Fawkes.
