...all seems fairly quiet on the .org these days. I look in but see little contentious or fally-outy stuff to stick me oar into.

Mostly local and domestic matters.... of course I'm not qualified to comment on the former and try to have as little as possible to do with the latter.

It must be the Christmas spirit. Long may it prevail....well , for a month at least.... I hope it's not long into 2009 before we are kicking lumps out of one another again - in a metaphorical sense of course.

Peace and gooddwill toward men...and women of the .org.
I'm off to see Cinderella on saturday - yes the festive season is well and truly upon us so lets ditch the clashes of opinion, cast aside the doom and gloom of economic woes and relish this little island in a bleak mid-winter.

Frosty winds made moan and all that...personally I never needed much more than breeze to get me at it. I'll work on a few for the new year ;)

No really, it wasn't. No one knows when Jebus was born.

I thought you had plonked your conks Percy, hadnt seen you in yonks.
There's been a few threads you must have missed. One claimed you were more dangerous than skinheads and in another some liberal minded so and so was calling for Sharia law in Britain.
You must try and keep up.

Ah, Binbob...That's because those meddling Christians were very quick to put Christian festivals on the same day as Pagan ones.

Christmas day is actually the pre-Christian festival of....er,....um...someone help me out here, quick!

Possibly the pagan festival of Yule, northener? :D but the Romans began celebrating their winter festival of Saturnalia a few days earlier I think....:confused

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturnalia

"Saturnalia is the feast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival) with which the Romans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome) commemorated the dedication of the temple of the god Saturn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_(mythology)), which was on 17 December (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_17). Over the years, it expanded to a whole week, to 23 December (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_23).
Saturnalia became one of the most popular Roman festivals. It was marked by tomfoolery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomfoolery) and reversal of social roles, in which slaves and masters ostensibly switched places."

So, by getting absolutely hammered and arsing about on the run-up to Yul...sorry, Christmas;), we are keeping alive an ancient festival!

Good, that's a good enough excuse for me...

Good shot, Metalman...I would never have remembered that name left to my own devices.

That's what I like about this site...seek and some will have the answer!:Razz

I rather thought it might be!

As for Yule:

'Yule is a winter festival identified with Christmas in modern times. The pagan Germanic peoples celebrated Yule from late December to early January on a date determined by the lunar Germanic calendar. When the Julian calendar was adopted in northern Europe, Yule was placed on December 25 to correspond with the date of Christmas, but was originally on December 21.

The word "Yule" come from the same root as the word "jolly." Modern Yule traditions include decorating a fir or spruce tree, burning a Yule log, hanging mistletoe and holly branches, giving gifts, and general celebration and merriment.'

Or so says Wiki.....

A jolly Yuletide to all! :D

On the above note I was a Bob Dylan and Band in concert last week. Sat 50 feet away from this Magician. Wow..... A man in his own World. Didn't say a word to the audience.
Came on, played and sang in his own space and left at the end.......Didn't sing any Xmas music....but what a nice way to be. Immersed in the Spirit...perhaps it was his spirit....Once in a lifetime.......and he has been doing this for what.....30/40 years. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
