Just coming up to a year ago we adopted a smashing little J.R X Beagle pup from a rescue in Wales. Not that we didn't try to find a smaller rescue dog locally, we tried honest! We wanted a smaller dog as companion for our Collie (and my husband !) but after many weeks of looking; came across Benji on The Internet and that was that !
'Friends Of The Animals' were brilliant; looked at our circumstances and after we provided an appropriate reference Benji was on his way to us; all the way from South Wales !
Benji travelled via a convoy of smashing people all of whom volunteered to drive him sometimes 100 miles plus and provided overnight accommodation when necessary.
Why am I telling you this now? Well I am the first person to argue we must support local Animal welfare charities; I do myself and will continue to give both time and financially what I can afford. BUT ! FOA offered to help with Penny (Remember the little white JR involved in a RTA and fostered by Munron ? -who did a brilliant job by the way - Fortunately Penny found a great home locally but FOA were prepared to help)
No animal in need is ever turned away. FOA is totally manned by volunteers- Ordinary people who truly do extraordinary things. They see things I could not bear to witness and save pets from horrendous situations.
Currently they are trying to raise funds for a Chocolate Labrador pup Rhys, who has horrendous back leg, hip problems and has just had major specialist surgery to enable him to walk rather than drag himself around and give him a good quality of life To fund the operation FOA is currently running a raffle for two short break holidays. PLEASE take a look at their Website WWW.friends-of-the-animals.co.uk (http://www.friends-of-the-animals.co.uk) For more information about Rhys visit WWW.friends-of-the-animals.co.uk/rhys.html (http://www.friends-of-the-animals.co.uk/rhys.html). There are also beautiful hand made Xmas stockings which can be personalised with your pets name -for just £4.50 !
So please take a look; you could win a great short break or buy a bargain !

Well done you with your rescue.

Wish I had known about FOA as we've been looking to take on another rescue and tried to do it while down south this summer. It was actually quite difficult and we failed miserably. We'd thought to get an ex-puppy farm bitch in Wales and were in contact with two or three rescue centres. We had references but the mechanics defeated us - we had our own dog with us, had nowhere to keep a scared traumatised dog while on holiday, couldn't face having an un-house-trained terrified dog in the car with our dog on a 14 hour car journey or stopping over in a hotel with her (just not fair on the dog). In the end we couldn't contact the Rescue people because their phone was always busy, couldn't find the place, bla-bla-bla. Maybe we just didn't try hard enough, but it was really frustrating. If it was made a bit easier for out-of-the-way people like us they would get more dogs rehomed

If I'd known FOA would actually "ship" a dog to you, I'd have gone there cos for one thing it costs a fortune in petrol, accommodation etc., as you know.

As it is, we're probably going to get our next dog from Moray next week so fingers crossed. I guess patience is a must in dog rescue. Meantime, will try and support our local rescue centres as much as I can.

Oh dear, I've just ranted. Sorry.

Thank you. Hope other people feel able to support this and other Rescues. Sorry you were not successful in finding a dog to adopt earlier in the year, as you say it does take time, patience and preparation! Good luck with your anticipated adoption.
If you still have time to consider other dogs have you though about adopting an Older Dog ? www.oldies.org.uk (http://www.oldies.org.uk) have a number of dogs looking for loving homes and they have so much to give. Good Luck !

Hi.
New dog possibly postponed for a few days due to icy/snowy conditions. Yes, I have looked on the Oldies website and could willingly take most of them. As you say, oldies have so much to give and I wish I could rehome them all. What I can't face is another trip south at the moment so that's still in the future for us. I see the P&J today is full of ads for puppies coincidentally ready just for Christmas. Grr. Grr.

If anyone's interested, there is a rescue organisation in Moray called BAARK but I've lost their phone number and haven't been able to find a website. Has anyone else heard of them?
