I hadn't seen this for nearly forty years.
It left an impression because I finally got to drive some of Route 66 in Millennium year...
anyway I got the dvd a prez for me anniversary like.

Watched it yesterday and it's fantastic. Henry Fonda acting his socks off...and an ensemble of long dead folk (most of 'em) .

The imagery of an auld heavily (unfeasibly) laden truck bumping and grinding its way out west had etched into me memory but to have it on a disc to savour has chuffed me no end. It is certainly in my top ten movie list.

Added t' me Leveller's c.d....Runrig...and Miss Potter dvd and staying wed for 38 years has certainly paid off!:D

Mrs.T had a fossil watch - appropriate coming from moi !

It can never match the depth of Hell Drivers: http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0051713/

Starred Patrick McGoohan, Herbert Lom, Gordon Jackson & Sean Connery amongst others.

What a film....what a cast....what a pile of crap! :D

You have to be joking...
please, tell me you are joking.

Hell Drivers - whilst in now way competing on the same emotional level as 'Grapes of Wrath' stands as a high watermark in nineteen fifties British cinema ! With a cast - almost all of whom went on to bigger, greater things' this every day tale of avarice, underdoggery and triumph of good over er...rampant Irish antagonism and Bill Hartnell chicanery is definitely one to be prized and cherished by any film buff worth his cellulloid.

Maybe because it is so old is the reason I think Hell Drivers was awful. In fact, it was so bad they probably had a paramedic on standby to rescucitate the actor's career's.

My cinematic memories begin somewhere around the times of the fantastic Herbie films , filled with colour, great scripts, great acting and beautiful locations. *Aye, they dinna come much better than that. :D

*If you believe that pile of tosh then your a bigger fool than I. [lol]

Ive never seen the film although I can see Henry Fonda being perfect for the part.
I read the book over a few days one Christmas 30 years ago. It made a miserable Christmas. Fantastic story though.

Another Steinbeck book made into a great film was "Of Mice and Men". Actually there have been two versions of it, the 1992 with Gary Sinise and John Malkovitch in the main roles, and the 1939 one with Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney Jr. I haven't seen the earlier one but the later one was very well done.

They have also done "Cannery Row" as a movie with Nick Nolte. Another one for my list of things to get around to seeing some time. I'm going to be so busy when I retire!
