and need to ask a really dumb question i really ought to know the answer to ....
in photography terms define 'low res' for me please? :o

Low Resolution.

i.e. Using very high jpeg compression producing jagged (pixelated) edges,

or low file size, when enlarged the image will loose its sharpness and definition.

Tell me the context and I will find an example for you.

I need to send 3 low res sample pictures to someone that's all :) so i'll assume a smaller size than full size is what's needed

If they are for viewing on a computer i would suggest that to keep file size down you reduce the resolution.

If you are using Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements the commands will be,

Image ➝ Image Size ➝ There should be a box marked Resolution, typical number in this would be 300, change this to 72 (Units should be Pixels / Inch)

Keep Resample Box ticked, save as highest quality JPEG with different file name to original, reopen to check quality on screen ok.
