Any landowners/farmers have problems with rabbits? im looking for land to fly my bird of prey on, have several farms where i do have permission on but numbers are thin on the ground, fully insured etc and all boundries respected.

Pm me if you can help?

PS this is a thread looking for permission, please dont spoil it by discussing whether or not hunting rabbits with a bird is morally correct  start another if you wish :D

Its a male, hes only about 5 months old, next year he will be in adult plumage and the brown feathers will be grey/white.

That picture reminds me of my favourite description of birds of prey. "They look at you like you owe them money"

That is nothing short of majestic, with a nonchalant 'don't mess with me' look. Wonderful!

The area for Rabbits is Freswick, behind the beach.

Alsolutley overrun with the things, I tried to contact the owners, but they live away somewhere.

So how does the bird know when it's crossed a property boundary to where it may not have permission or that the grouse or any other prey it happens on is not yet in season? Who is the guilty party in these circumstances?
Kind of intrigued to know how the game laws work in these situations.

the game belongs to whoevers land it is on, ideally you stay away from any boundrays, and for a goshawk to catch a grouse in free flight would be pretty unheard of, also you choose to slip the bird, as you have control to do so by holding onto the jess,s (leather leash/straps) so really no flying on accidental game should ever happen and as it is the season to hunt ie not the summer pretty much anything is in season game wise.

A goshawk hunts from the fist, it doesnt soar or fly free, once game is sighted or flushed then the falconer releases the bird, they are sprinters and fly short distances very fastly before returning to the fist again for a small food reward.

May i say what a stunning bird he is. I have a FHH ( Isla ) who is just being trained at the moment she is 5 months old & an EEO who is 2 years old (Majic), I am very new to hunting with birds of prey .I friend of mine who is very knowledgeable is helping me train my bird , what area do you have permission to hunt in and how long have you been doing Falconry ?

Since this is a birds of prey/falconry tread, I have another question. Which vet do/would you both use? Is there anyone specialised in the North? Maybe one in Inverness? (I've only moved here recently and used to use Lawrie in Falkirk/Cumbernauld, but that's too far to travel now)
I don't need a vet now, but it's good to have an address. Please pm me if you know someone.
Thanks!

Can you explain to a dafty like me what kind of bird Majic is please? I had no idea that there were folks around who had birds of prey, in my ignorance I assumed that it would be "gentry" who would be involved in this hobby/sport........... More pics please :)

I take my birds to Sinclair Manson in Thurso he specialises in birds , he takes in and treats any wild birds of prey that are found injured, everyone i know who keeps parrots & birds of prey go to him.

Sinclair Manson is very knowledgable on birds; parrots , birds of prey or any other species including wild birds. It is Sinclair I usually go to with any of my birds. He is with D.S. McGregor in Thurso -- telephone 01847 892387

That's great, thank you :), it's good to know there's someone with some experience as I really dislike taking a bird of prey to a normal vet (e.g. they will often prescribe pigeon/seed eating bird medicine to put in the birds 'drinking water', while what you really need is carnivore medicine that is used for dogs or cats).

How does one come to have these birds, do you buy them, catch them, rescue them? Just interested.

You lucky girl ! what a handsome bird. I think you falconry peeps should be getting a wee niche of your own on the Org and share pics tips - even a demonstration perhaps for us bird lovers........??:)

They are magnificent. I have only recently been converted to having anything to do with birds, but now I just adore them. I am into parrots, but we used to have a family of Tawny Frog Mouths in the tree, and would watch the parents teaching the babies to fly all around the tops of the trees in our yard. It was wonderful, unfortunately, one of the adult birds was hit by a car and no other birds have ever used the tree to nest in.
One day I would love a macaw, but that is just a dream, I haven't the space or the knowledge to accomodate one.

You would buy them from captive bred parents, it is against the law to take a raptor from the wild into captivity in this country, although in america it is not, providing you are allocated a liceanse to do so.

Each bird has papers to state they are captive bred and the papers match the rings on there legs.
